An Honest Guide from Adrian — 25+ Years on These Routes

Three Airports. Dozens of Options. One That Actually Works.

Milan has three airports — Malpensa (MXP), Linate (LIN) and Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY) — and each one is different in distance, transport connections, and the practical experience of arriving with luggage after a long flight. Online guides list the options. This guide tells you what they actually feel like.

I am Adrian, founder and driver of MilanobyCar. I have been picking up passengers from all three Milan airports since 1993 — in every weather condition, at every hour of the day and night, through strikes, roadworks, delays and the controlled chaos that Italian airport ground transport is sometimes famous for. I have watched passengers struggle with buses, wait for taxis that never come, and drag suitcases down metro stairs in the rain.

This is what I would tell a friend asking which option to choose.

Know Your Airport First

Malpensa, Linate and Bergamo — Three Very Different Situations

The right transport option depends first on which airport you are using. They are not interchangeable — the distance, the connections and the experience of ground transport differ significantly.

✈️ Malpensa MXP
The Main International Hub
50 km northwest of Milan. Most long-haul flights, many European carriers, two terminals (T1 and T2). The furthest airport from the city — which makes the transport question more consequential. The Malpensa Express train runs to Cadorna and Centrale but takes 50–75 minutes and leaves you at a station with luggage to manage. Private transfer: from 180 EUR.
⭐ 3.2 · 38,000+ Google reviews
✈️ Linate LIN
The City Airport
7 km east of the city centre. Compact, modern, mostly European domestic flights. The closest airport to Milan — but the ground transport options are limited. The metro connection to the centre is practical, but requires a walk across the car park and still involves stairs and stops. Private transfer: from 120 EUR.
⭐ 4.2 · 17,754 Google reviews
✈️ Bergamo Orio al Serio BGY
The Budget Airline Airport
45 km northeast of Milan, near Bergamo. Primarily Ryanair and low-cost carriers. No direct train connection to Milan — the only public option is a coach to Stazione Centrale. The bus takes 60+ minutes in normal traffic and significantly longer during rush hours. Private transfer is the most practical solution. Contact us for a custom quote.

What a Private Transfer Actually Looks Like

From the Moment You Land to the Door of Your Hotel

Adrian's Note on the Arrivals Experience

The moment most people get the transport decision wrong is the moment they walk out of arrivals. You are tired, you have luggage, you do not know the airport layout, and suddenly you are deciding between a confusing bus stop, a taxi rank queue that stretches around the corner, and an Uber driver who cannot enter the airport pickup zone and is waiting 400 metres away in a designated area you cannot find.

With a pre-booked private transfer, none of this happens. I am inside the arrivals hall — not outside, not in a car park, not in a restricted pickup zone — holding a sign with your name. I have been tracking your flight since it took off. If you are delayed, I already know. When you walk out of customs, I am there. I take your bags. I walk you to the car. We drive.

Flight Tracked Before You Land
Real-time monitoring from departure. Delayed 2 hours? We know. Early arrival? We know. Your pickup time adjusts automatically — no calls needed from your side.
Met Inside the Arrivals Hall
Your driver is waiting inside — past customs, with a name sign. Not at a bus stop outside. Not in a pickup zone 10 minutes' walk away. Inside, where you land.
Bags Handled to the Car
Your driver carries your luggage from the moment you meet — through the terminal, across to the parking area, directly into the boot of the car. You carry nothing.
Door to Door — Exact Address
Dropped at your hotel entrance, apartment building, business address or private residence. No final metro ride. No last taxi. The journey ends exactly where you need to be.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best way to get from Malpensa Airport to Milan city centre?

The most comfortable and reliable option is a pre-booked private transfer. Your driver meets you inside the arrivals hall with your name, handles all luggage, and takes you directly to your hotel or address in Milan — no changes, no queues. The train (Malpensa Express) is the best public transport option, but leaves you at a train station with luggage to manage to your final destination. Budget 50–75 minutes for the train versus 45–60 minutes for a private transfer, door to door.

How much does a private transfer from Malpensa to Milan cost?

A private transfer from Malpensa Airport to Milan city centre with MilanobyCar starts from 180 EUR per vehicle. This is a fixed, all-inclusive price covering meet and greet inside the arrivals hall, real-time flight monitoring, full luggage assistance, and door-to-door delivery to your exact address in Milan. There are no extras to pay on arrival.

How much does a transfer from Linate Airport to Milan cost?

A private transfer from Linate Airport to Milan city centre starts from 120 EUR per vehicle. Linate is only 7 km from the city, so the journey is shorter — but the meet and greet inside arrivals, full luggage assistance and door-to-door service are the same as for Malpensa.

Does the driver wait inside the airport or outside?

Inside. Your driver waits inside the arrivals hall — past the customs exit, with a sign bearing your name. This is a key difference between a professional pre-booked service and a taxi or rideshare. Taxis wait at a rank outside. Uber and similar rideshare services are restricted to designated pickup zones outside the terminal, often a significant walk away. With MilanobyCar, your driver is the first face you see as you walk out of customs.

Is Uber available at Malpensa and Linate airports?

Uber operates in Milan, but at both Malpensa and Linate it is restricted to designated pickup zones outside the terminal. You will need to walk to these zones with your luggage — and the driver is not permitted to assist you inside the terminal. Prices are subject to surge pricing, which during events like the Salone del Mobile or Milan Fashion Week can significantly exceed the cost of a pre-booked private transfer with a fixed price.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

Your driver monitors your flight in real time from departure and adjusts arrival time automatically. Whether you land 30 minutes early or 3 hours late, your driver will be waiting when you walk out. Free waiting time is included for all standard delays. You do not need to call or send messages — we track the flight and act accordingly.

Is the Malpensa Express train a good option?

The Malpensa Express is a practical and affordable option for solo travellers with light luggage who are comfortable with the city transit system. The train runs to Milano Cadorna and Milano Centrale and costs approximately 13 EUR per person. However, it does not adapt to your flight time, cannot accommodate large luggage easily, and drops you at a train station rather than your hotel. For families, groups, and travellers with significant luggage, a private transfer is significantly more practical.
