Private Day Trip from Milan

Zermatt from Milan in a single day

Zermatt is about 230 km from Milan, roughly three and a half hours each way: up the A26 past Lake Maggiore, through Domodossola, over the Simplon Pass at 2,005 metres and down into the Rhone valley at Brig, then up the Mattertal to Täsch. Zermatt itself is car-free, so the last stretch is a 12-minute shuttle train from Täsch.

It is a long day, and we are honest about it: with 7 hours on the road you have around four hours in Zermatt, enough for the village and the classic view of the Matterhorn, or for one excursion such as the Gornergrat railway. If you want both, add one or two extra hours. For a one-way trip, see our Milan to Zermatt transfer. The price is per vehicle: from €1,260 with an E-Class, from €1,415 with a V-Class for up to six.

Frequently Asked Questions

Zermatt Day Trip from Milan — FAQ

Is a day trip from Milan to Zermatt possible?
Yes, as a long day of about 12 hours. The drive is around three and a half hours each way over the Simplon Pass, which leaves about four hours in Zermatt. Adding one or two extra hours makes the day more relaxed.
Can the car drive into Zermatt?
No. Zermatt is car-free. We park at Täsch, 5 km before Zermatt, and you take the shuttle train, which runs every 20 minutes and takes 12 minutes. The driver waits for you in Täsch.
How much does a private day trip from Milan to Zermatt cost?
From €1,260 per car with a Mercedes E-Class (up to 2 passengers) and from €1,415 with a V-Class (up to 6), for 12 hours with the distance included. Weekends are +20%, major holidays +50%, extra hours €75 or €85.
Do we need a passport?
Yes, bring a passport or an EU identity card: Zermatt is in Switzerland. Switzerland is in the Schengen area, but checks at the border are possible. The currency is the Swiss franc, and cards are accepted almost everywhere.
Is the Simplon Pass open in winter?
The Simplon road is kept open all year, but heavy snowfall can close it for a few hours. Your driver checks the conditions before leaving and, if necessary, takes the alternative route, which can add time.
What can we do in four hours in Zermatt?
Either the village and the Matterhorn views from the river, with lunch, or one excursion such as the Gornergrat cog railway to 3,089 metres. For both, or for the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, add extra hours when you book.

Zermatt from Milan by car or by train?

By train the journey takes about four hours each way with changes at Domodossola or Brig and Visp, so a day trip leaves little time in Zermatt. A private car takes you over the Simplon Pass at your own pace, waits for you in Täsch and brings you back to your hotel door.

When is the best time for a Zermatt day trip?

From June to September the pass is clear and the days are long; in winter Zermatt is a ski resort and the Matterhorn is often at its sharpest on cold, clear days. In any season, check the forecast: the Matterhorn can hide in cloud.

How much is a Zermatt day trip?

MilanobyCar charges a fixed price per car: from €1,260 for two passengers in a Mercedes E-Class and from €1,415 for up to six in a V-Class, for 12 hours including driver, fuel, tolls, Swiss motorway fees and parking. The exact price for your date appears in the booking form.
