Private Day Trip from Milan to Venice — by Private Chauffeur

Venice is 270 kilometres from Milan and the only major Italian city accessible entirely on foot or by water. A Venice day trip from Milan makes a concrete difference as a private tour: you control departure time — leaving before 7:30 AM matters, because Venice before 10 AM is measurably quieter at every major site — you return when you decide, and you carry luggage directly to the vehicle parked 400 metres from the city entrance. No strangers, no coach schedules, no group dynamics.

MilanobyCar has operated private chauffeur tours from Milan since 1993. The fleet consists of owned, late-model Mercedes vehicles — E-Class for couples, V-Class for families and groups up to six. Every vehicle includes an English-speaking chauffeur, Wi-Fi, and climate control. Prices are fixed per vehicle, not per person: a family of four pays the same rate as a couple in the same car class. The itinerary can be adjusted up to the evening before departure. Book your Venice private tour directly in two minutes.

Unlike the Trenitalia Frecciarossa (EUR 30–60 per person each way from Milan Centrale, arriving at Venice Santa Lucia — still 25 minutes by vaporetto from Piazza San Marco), the private Mercedes drops you at Tronchetto garage, a 5-minute walk from the historic centre. Unlike coach tours from Viator or GetYourGuide, there are no scheduled stops, no waiting for other passengers, and no fixed return time. As any private chauffeur tour from Milan demonstrates, the difference is not just comfort — it is full control over every hour of your day.

MilanobyCar vs alternatives. GetYourGuide and Viator coach tours depart from a fixed meeting point in Milan, share vehicles with up to 50 passengers, and charge EUR 130–160 per person for a 14-hour day. For a group of 4 or more, a MilanobyCar V-Class at EUR 1,400 per vehicle equals EUR 233–350 per person — fully private, flexible timing, and door-to-door from your hotel.

Venice Day Trip Itinerary — What You Will See

Six stops across 12 hours. Pickup at your Milan hotel at 7:00 AM, return by 7:30 PM. All stops can be adjusted; this reflects what most clients choose on a first visit to Venice.

Departure

Hotel Pickup in Milan — Leaving Before the Traffic

Your chauffeur collects you at your Milan hotel at 7:00 AM. The A4 autostrada east is the direct motorway to Venice, passing Bergamo, Brescia, the Verona ring road, and Padua before reaching the Ponte della Liberta — the 3.8 km causeway that carries the road across the lagoon. That final approach, with Venice appearing to rise directly from the water, is best seen in morning light with little traffic. Departing no later than 7:30 AM is essential to reach the main sites before crowds peak around 10:30 AM.

Depart 7:00–7:30 AM Included in package
Entry point

Tronchetto & Piazzale Roma — Gateway to Venice on Foot

Private vehicles park at the Tronchetto garage on the western lagoon edge (EUR 50–70 per day, paid directly to the garage). From Tronchetto it is a 5-minute walk to Piazzale Roma, then across the Ponte della Costituzione — a contemporary footbridge designed by Santiago Calatrava, completed in 2008 — into the historic centre. This is the only practical entry point for private cars arriving from the mainland. Your chauffeur can accompany you into Venice or remain with the vehicle; most clients prefer the chauffeur to meet them back at Tronchetto at an agreed time.

Arrive ~9:30 AM Parking EUR 50–70 — paid at garage (not included)
First stop

Rialto Bridge — Venice's Oldest Grand Canal Crossing

The Ponte di Rialto was rebuilt in stone between 1588 and 1591 after two earlier wooden structures collapsed. The best ground-level view is from the Riva del Vin embankment to the south, not from the bridge itself. The adjacent Pescheria fish market (open Tuesday to Saturday until noon) shows the daily catch from the northern Adriatic and the Venetian lagoon: grey mullet, razor clams, soft-shell crab, and moleche in season. The Fondaco dei Tedeschi — the former German trading house on the bridge's north side, now a department store — has a free rooftop terrace with a wide canal view; access requires a free timed booking online, best secured at least one day before your visit.

Allow 60–90 minutes Free — market, bridge, Riva del Vin
Highlight of the tour

Piazza San Marco — Basilica, Campanile & Doge's Palace

St. Mark's Basilica (Basilica di San Marco) was first built in 829 AD to house relics brought from Alexandria; the current structure dates from 1071. The free entrance area covers the narthex and part of the nave; the Presbytery and Pala d'Oro altar screen cost EUR 3. Arrive before 11 AM to avoid queues even with a pre-booked slot. The Campanile (EUR 10) is the only structure providing a proper aerial view of Venice's rooflines, islands, and the lagoon. The Doge's Palace on the south side of the square — the former seat of the Venetian Republic's government and court — requires 2–3 hours for the full interior including the Bridge of Sighs (EUR 25–30; book online 24 hours in advance). One practical tip: coffee standing at the bar inside any side-street bar costs EUR 1.20; the same coffee at a table facing the piazza costs EUR 10 plus a music surcharge.

Allow 2–3 hours · Arrive by 10:00 AM Basilica free · Pala d'Oro EUR 3 · Campanile EUR 10 · Doge's Palace EUR 25–30 (not included)
Afternoon exploration

Cannaregio — The Neighbourhood Where Venetians Have Lunch

Cannaregio is the northernmost of Venice's six sestieri and the least saturated by day-trippers. The Fondamenta della Misericordia — a canal-side street 10 minutes' walk north of Rialto — has a continuous row of osterie where locals and students eat: cicchetti (marinated fish on bread, polenta squares, cured meats) cost EUR 1.50–3 each at the bar, and a full pasta lunch with wine runs EUR 15–25. The Ghetto Nuovo, established in 1516 and historically the world's first Jewish Ghetto, is a further 5-minute walk north and remains almost entirely free of tour groups before 3 PM. Three Renaissance-era synagogues are still in use; the Museo Ebraico di Venezia inside the Ghetto costs EUR 12.

1:00–3:30 PM · Allow 90 minutes Free · Museum EUR 12 optional
Return

Return Drive — Back at Your Milan Hotel by Evening

Your chauffeur meets you at Piazzale Roma or Tronchetto at the agreed time, typically 4:30–5:00 PM. The return on the A4 takes 2.5–3 hours depending on traffic. With a 5:00 PM Venice departure, you arrive back at your Milan hotel between 7:30 and 8:00 PM. If you want more time in Venice — to visit Murano island by public vaporetto, to stay for an evening aperitivo at Fondamenta delle Zattere, or to catch St. Mark's Basilica at the quieter late-afternoon hour — extensions cost EUR 70 per additional hour.

What Our Passengers Say

Real reviews from travellers who took private day tours from Milan with MilanobyCar.

★★★★★

“We arrived at Rialto before 10 AM and had the bridge almost to ourselves. The pickup from our hotel was exactly on time, the driver knew the best entry point, and we had no groups, no waiting, no fixed agenda. Exactly as described on the website.”

Sarah M. — London, UK
Venice private day tour — September 2025
★★★★★

“For a family of five the V-Class was the right choice. We left when we decided, not when a coach said. The driver parked at Tronchetto and met us there at 5 PM. Per-person cost for the group was competitive with the train, and we had full flexibility throughout the day.”

Michael T. — New York, USA
Venice V-Class family tour — July 2025
★★★★★

“Anniversary trip in April. The early departure meant St. Mark's Square was genuinely quiet the first hour. Our driver suggested Cannaregio for lunch — correct call, good food at real prices with no tourists. A well-organised, honest service.”

How long is the drive from Milan to Venice?
The drive from Milan to Venice takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours each way on the A4 motorway, depending on traffic. MilanobyCar recommends departing at 7:00 AM to reach Venice by 9:30 AM. The full 12-hour package gives you approximately 6 hours in the city before the return drive.
Is this a private tour or a group tour?
Entirely private. You travel alone with your group in your own Mercedes vehicle. There are no shared coaches, no stops to collect other passengers, and no strangers. The vehicle and chauffeur are reserved exclusively for you for the full 12 hours.
What is included in the Venice day trip from Milan?
Included: private Mercedes for 12 hours, English-speaking chauffeur, door-to-door hotel pickup and return in Milan, all motorway tolls, fuel, Wi-Fi, and a fully flexible itinerary. Not included: Venice Tronchetto parking (EUR 50–70), museum and basilica entrance fees, lunch, gondola rides, and vaporetto tickets.
Can we customise the itinerary and stops?
Yes, fully. Suggested stops include Rialto Bridge, St. Mark's Basilica and Square, Doge's Palace area, and Cannaregio district. You can add Murano island (public vaporetto required from Piazzale Roma, approximately EUR 9.50 per person), the Jewish Ghetto, or Dorsoduro. Inform your chauffeur when booking or the evening before departure.
What vehicles are available for the Venice day trip?

Additionally: St. Mark's Basilica Pala d'Oro EUR 3, Doge's Palace EUR 25–30, Campanile EUR 10. None of these are included in the MilanobyCar package price.

Private Venice Day Trip from Milan vs Coach Tour or Train

Viator and GetYourGuide list Milan-to-Venice coach tours at EUR 130–160 per person, departing from a fixed meeting point in Milan with approximately 5 hours of transit time across a 14-hour day. The Trenitalia Frecciarossa (EUR 30–60 per person each way, from Milan Centrale to Venezia Santa Lucia) is the fastest alternative at 2 hours 25 minutes, but Venice Santa Lucia station sits at the city's western edge — still 25 minutes by public vaporetto from Piazza San Marco, with train tickets, timetables, and luggage to manage. A private Mercedes drops you at Tronchetto garage, 400 metres from the historic centre, with no transfers, no fixed times, and no strangers. For three or more passengers, a MilanobyCar V-Class at EUR 1,400 works out to EUR 233–466 per person — comparable to or below premium Frecciarossa round-trip pricing for the same group, with door-to-door service included and no logistics to manage.

How Much Does a Venice Day Trip from Milan Cost?

MilanobyCar charges EUR 1,100 for a Mercedes E-Class (up to 2 passengers) and EUR 1,400 for a V-Class (up to 6 passengers) for the full 12-hour private package. The price covers the vehicle, chauffeur, all A4 tolls, and fuel — nothing added at checkout. Venice-specific costs paid separately: Tronchetto parking EUR 50–70, Venice day visitor fee EUR 5 on selected dates (verify at cda.ve.it), St. Mark's Basilica EUR 3, Doge's Palace EUR 25–30, Campanile EUR 10. A gondola ride costs EUR 80–120 per gondola (not per person). For a group of 6 sharing the V-Class, the per-person vehicle cost is EUR 233 — similar to shared coach tours but entirely private. Extension hours cost EUR 70 per hour. Book online in 2 minutes or call +39 335 821 0912.

Venice: What to Know Before You Go

Venice is 270 km from Milan on the A4 autostrada east, a direct motorway with no mountain passes. The city sits on 118 small islands connected by 400 bridges; motor vehicles cannot enter the historic centre, so all movement inside is on foot or by water. The quietest months are November and February; the most crowded are July, August, and Carnival (late February). Key fact that surprises most first-time visitors: the main sites close earlier than expected — St. Mark's Basilica closes at 5 PM (4 PM in winter), and Doge's Palace last entry is 5:30 PM. The Frari church in Dorsoduro, holding Titian's Assumption altarpiece from 1516, is the best alternative to Doge's Palace and rarely has queues before 11 AM (entry EUR 5). For repeat visitors, Murano (working glass furnaces, direct from Piazzale Roma by Line 12) and Burano (painted houses, lacemaking) are 40–50 minutes by public vaporetto and rarely appear on standard day-tour itineraries.
