Milan to St. Moritz Private Transfer, About 3 Hours Door to Door

A private transfer from Milan to St. Moritz takes about three hours and covers roughly 170 km. Your driver collects you at your hotel or home in Milan, or inside arrivals at Malpensa, Linate or Bergamo, drives up the eastern shore of Lake Como to Chiavenna, crosses into Switzerland at Castasegna and climbs the Maloja Pass into the Engadine. You step out at the door of your hotel or chalet. The price is per car, not per person, with fuel, tolls and airport parking included.

We are a Milan company, and the Maloja road is one we drive all winter. From November to April every car runs on winter tyres with chains on board, and before each winter transfer we check the Graubünden road reports. The pass is open all year, but after heavy snow it can close for a few hours. When that happens we would rather call you the evening before and move your pick-up time than leave you waiting at a closed barrier in Casaccia.

We drop off anywhere in St. Moritz, Dorf or Bad, and in the villages around it: Champfèr, Suvretta, Celerina, Pontresina, Samedan, Silvaplana and Sils Maria. That includes the large hotels, such as Badrutt’s Palace, Kulm, Suvretta House and Carlton, as well as private chalets and holiday flats. If you are flying privately, we also drive to Engadin Airport in Samedan. On the way back we collect you at your door and take you to any Milan address or airport. View prices and book online →

MilanobyCar vs the alternatives. SIXT Ride and Blacklane can book you a car to St. Moritz, but they work through partner operators, so you rarely know who is actually coming. MilanobyCar is the operator: our own Mercedes, our own drivers, and a team that drives this Alpine road every season. You book with us directly and speak to the people who will drive you.

The rate depends on the vehicle, the pick-up point and when you travel: daytime, night-time and public holidays are priced differently. Rather than list prices that might not match your date, we show the exact, current price on our booking page. FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions — Milan to St. Moritz

How much does a private transfer from Milan to St. Moritz cost?

It depends on the vehicle, the pick-up point and the date and time of travel: night-time pick-ups and public holidays are priced differently from a weekday daytime transfer. The exact, current price for your date is shown on our online booking page and confirmed before you pay. The price is per car, not per person, and includes fuel, tolls, airport parking and waiting time.

How long is the drive from Milan to St. Moritz?

About 3 hours from central Milan or Linate Airport, 3 h 15 min to 3 h 30 min from Malpensa and 2 h 30 min to 2 h 45 min from Bergamo Airport. The distance is roughly 170 km from the city. On winter Saturdays and after heavy snow, allow an extra 30 to 45 minutes.

Is the Maloja Pass open in winter?

Yes. The Maloja Pass (1,815 m) is open all year. After a heavy snowfall it can close for a few hours while it is cleared. All our cars run on winter tyres from November to April with chains on board, and we check road conditions before every winter transfer.

Can you carry skis and snowboards?

Yes, at no extra cost. Ski and snowboard bags travel in the Mercedes V-Class, which takes up to 6 passengers with suitcases and ski gear. The E-Class sedan is not suitable for ski bags.

How early should I book for the ski season?

For January to March, book at least 2 to 3 weeks ahead. Christmas and New Year, the February school holidays and the big event weekends in St. Moritz, such as Snow Polo in late January and White Turf on Sundays in February, fill up earlier.

Which airport is closest to St. Moritz?

Engadin Airport in Samedan is 5 km away but only handles private flights. For scheduled flights, the Milan airports are the closest by road: about 2 h 30 min to 2 h 45 min from Bergamo, around 3 hours from Linate and 3 h 15 min to 3 h 30 min from Malpensa. Zurich Airport is roughly 3 hours away by car.

Do I need a passport to go from Milan to St. Moritz?

Yes. Bring a passport or a valid EU identity card. The route crosses the Italian-Swiss border at Castasegna. Switzerland is in the Schengen area, so there is usually no stop, but Swiss customs can check the car.

Is MilanobyCar a local Italian company?

Yes. MilanobyCar is a Milan-based, owner-operated NCC company established in 1993 and still run by the same founding team. We are not a global platform, a franchise, or a booking aggregator. Every vehicle belongs to us and every driver is employed directly by us. When you contact us, you are in direct contact with the people who will collect you.

Are prices fixed or can they change?

Rates depend on the vehicle, the pick-up point and the date and time of travel: daytime, night-time and public holidays are priced differently. You see the exact price on our online booking page before you pay, and once your booking is confirmed that price is fixed. It does not change for traffic, tolls, luggage or delays.

What is included in the price?

Every booking includes: the private Mercedes, the English-speaking licensed NCC chauffeur, meet-and-greet inside the terminal with a name board, real-time flight monitoring, 60 minutes of free waiting after landing, full luggage assistance from baggage claim to your door, all motorway tolls, parking, and fuel. The fixed price confirmed at booking cannot change on arrival.

How do I book?

Contact us by WhatsApp or phone at +39 335 821 0912, by email at booking@milanobycar.com, or via the online form at milanobycar.com/book-now. You receive written confirmation with a fixed, all-inclusive price within the hour in most cases. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before pick-up.

The Route: Lake Como, Chiavenna and the Maloja Pass

From Milan the road heads north on the SS36 to Lecco, then follows the eastern shore of Lake Como through a long run of tunnels past Varenna and Bellano to Colico, at the top of the lake. A short climb up the Valchiavenna brings you to Chiavenna, the last Italian town, and ten minutes later to the Swiss border at Castasegna. On the Swiss side the road runs through Val Bregaglia, a narrow valley of stone villages. After Casaccia it climbs the Maloja in a tight series of hairpins, the only really winding part of the trip, about fifteen minutes long. If anyone in your group gets carsick, tell the driver and take the front seat. At the top, at 1,815 metres, you come out onto the flat floor of the Upper Engadine and drive past the lakes of Sils and Silvaplana into St. Moritz.

Private Car, Train or Rental Car from Milan to St. Moritz?

There is no direct train. The usual rail route is Milano Centrale to Tirano with Trenord, about 2 h 30 min, then the Rhaetian Railway over the Bernina Pass to St. Moritz, roughly another 2 h 30 min. Count on around 5 hours with a change, plus the trip to Centrale and from St. Moritz station to your hotel. The Bernina line is one of the most beautiful rail journeys in the Alps, and if you travel light and have time, it is worth doing once. Per person the train is much cheaper. For a family or a group with ski bags, or anyone landing at Malpensa, a private car is about two hours faster, the price is shared across the car and nobody carries luggage between trains. A rental car works too, but in winter you need proper equipment and some confidence on the Maloja hairpins in snow.

Practical Tips: Border, Winter Dates and the Drive Back

Keep passports or EU ID cards with you in the car, not in the boot: Swiss customs at Castasegna do stop vehicles, and Swiss allowances for meat, alcohol and cash are lower than many visitors expect. In winter, add 30 to 45 minutes on Saturdays, when traffic on the SS36 builds up towards the ski resorts. For the return, we work backwards from your flight time. For an international departure from Malpensa in winter we usually suggest leaving St. Moritz 5 to 6 hours before take-off, because a snowy morning on the pass and a queue at security can each take an hour.
