Lake Como is one of the trips we drive most often. The roads are beautiful but narrow, many villages have restricted traffic zones, and the big hotels each have their own way in. Knowing which side of the lake you are staying on matters more than the distance: Cernobbio, Moltrasio, Tremezzo and Menaggio are on the west shore, reached from Como; Varenna is on the east shore, reached from Lecco; and Bellagio sits at the tip between the two branches. We plan the road for the day, not just the shortest one on the map.

Lake Como is shaped like an upside-down Y. Where you are staying decides the road: the west shore from Como, the east shore from Lecco, and Bellagio in the middle.

Linate (LIN) is about an hour from Como. Our driver meets you inside arrivals at all three airports with 60 minutes of free waiting time after landing.
How do you get to Bellagio by car?
Bellagio is at the tip of the peninsula between the two branches of the lake. By car you can reach it on the lakeside road from Como, about 1 h 40 from Milan, or drive up the west shore and take the car ferry from Cadenabbia, a crossing of about 15 minutes. We choose the faster option for the day and time of your transfer. Ferry tickets are not included in the price.
Is the ferry included in the price?
No. Our prices include fuel, motorway tolls and parking, but not ferries. Most transfers to Lake Como do not need a ferry at all. If the car ferry is the better option for your hotel, we tell you before you book.
Do you provide child seats?
Yes. Baby seats, child seats and boosters are free of charge on medium and long journeys such as Milan to Lake Como. Tell us the age of each child when you book so we can prepare the right seats.
How many passengers and suitcases fit in the car?
The Mercedes E-Class takes up to 2 passengers with 2 large suitcases and cabin bags. The Mercedes V-Class takes up to 6 passengers with their luggage, at the same price for 1 to 6 people. With several large suitcases we recommend the V-Class rather than the S-Class, whose boot is smaller.
Can you drive to Passalacqua, Villa d’Este and the other lake hotels?
Yes. We drive to every hotel and villa on Lake Como, including Villa d'Este in Cernobbio, Passalacqua in Moltrasio, Mandarin Oriental in Blevio, Il Sereno in Torno, Grand Hotel Tremezzo and Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni in Bellagio, as well as private villas and holiday homes. Milan to Passalacqua takes about an hour.

Milan to Passalacqua and the Villas of Moltrasio
Passalacqua, in Moltrasio, is about 58 km and around an hour from central Milan, and about 50 minutes from Malpensa. The road from Como follows the west shore through Cernobbio; the last stretch is narrow, with the hotel entrance directly on the lakeside road, so a driver who knows it saves a lot of manoeuvring with luggage. The same applies to the other villas of the southern west shore, between Cernobbio, Moltrasio, Carate Urio and Laglio. It is a road we drive very often, especially in summer.
Private Car, Train or Ferry from Milan to Lake Como?
The train is the cheapest way per person: Trenord trains run from Milano Centrale and Porta Garibaldi to Como San Giovanni and from Milano Cadorna to Como Nord Lago, in 40 minutes to an hour, and from Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino in about an hour. For Bellagio, Tremezzo or Menaggio you then continue by ferry or taxi, with all your luggage. A private car takes you from the airport or your Milan hotel straight to the door, with no changes, which matters with suitcases, children or a late flight. For a couple, the train is often enough. For a family, a group or anyone landing at Malpensa, the private car is usually faster and the price is shared across the car.
Practical Tips: Ferries, Restricted Zones and Summer Traffic
The car ferry between Cadenabbia, Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio crosses the middle of the lake in 15 to 20 minutes and can be quicker than the road at busy times; ferry tickets are not included in our prices. Como, Varenna and Bellagio have restricted traffic zones (ZTL); we drop you as close as the rules allow and help with the bags. In July and August, and on sunny weekends from April to October, the lakeside roads are busy: for an afternoon flight from Malpensa, we usually suggest leaving Bellagio or Tremezzo four hours before take-off.
