A private transfer from Milan to Merano covers about 305 km and takes around 3 h 35: the A4 motorway past Bergamo and Brescia to Verona, north on the A22 Brenner motorway past Trento to Bolzano, and the last 28 km on the MeBo expressway to Merano. In summer, on request, yes: the Stelvio is one of the great mountain roads of the Alps and we can plan it as a scenic route with extra time. It is closed in winter, roughly from November to late May, so from autumn to spring we drive on the motorway via Verona. Which Airport for Merano: Verona, Bergamo, Linate or Malpensa?
Verona is the closest major airport to Merano, about 2 hours by car, and transfers from there are on request. Of the Milan airports, Bergamo is the closest at about 2 h 50, then Linate at about 3 h 20 and Malpensa at about 3 h 45, on the far side of Milan. Malpensa has the most long-haul and international flights, so many of our guests land there and drive straight round Milan to South Tyrol.
Merano, the Spa Town of South Tyrol
Merano, Meran in German, has been a spa resort since the 19th century, with promenades along the Passirio river, palm trees and a mild climate below mountains over 3,000 m. The Terme Merano thermal baths are in the centre, the gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle climb the hillside above the town, and from late November the Christmas market lines the river promenade. In winter a cable car climbs from the edge of town to the Merano 2000 ski area.
Mountain Passes Near Merano in Winter
The Stelvio Pass, the scenic road from Lombardy over to the Val Venosta, and the Timmelsjoch (Passo del Rombo) into Austria are closed in winter, roughly from November to late May. The Passo Giovo to Vipiteno can close or need chains after snowfall. We never rely on any of them: our route from Milan is motorway and expressway all the way. In summer, on request, we can drive from Lake Como over the Stelvio as a scenic route.
Practical Tips: Saturdays and the Drive Back
Saturday is change-over day in the Dolomites and the A22 Brenner motorway can be slow between Bolzano and Verona, so we plan extra time. For an afternoon flight from Malpensa, we usually suggest leaving Merano about six hours before take-off, and about five hours for Linate or Bergamo.
