Milan or Malpensa to Passo del Tonale by Private Car

A private transfer from Milan to Passo del Tonale covers about 175 km and takes around 3 hours: the A4 motorway to Bergamo, then the road up the Val Camonica past Lake Iseo, Lovere, Breno and Edolo to Ponte di Legno, and the last 11 km up to the pass at 1,883 m. From Linate it takes about 2 h 45 and from Bergamo, the closest Milan airport, about 2 h 10. From Malpensa it is about 3 h 10. The price is for the whole car, not per person, and includes fuel, motorway tolls and parking.

The whole route is in Italy, with no tunnel toll and no vignette. Tonale is itself a pass, on the border between Lombardy and Trentino, and the road over it is kept open all winter; closures are rare and short, after very heavy snowfall. The Gavia Pass from Bormio, by contrast, is closed from autumn to late spring, and we never use it in winter. By public transport the trip means a train from Milan to Brescia, the local line up the valley to Edolo and a bus to Ponte di Legno and the pass: four hours or more with your ski bags on every step.

We drive to every hotel and residence at Passo del Tonale and in Ponte di Legno, Temù and Vermiglio, close to the lifts of the Pontedilegno-Tonale ski area and the cable car to the Presena Glacier, and on request on to Madonna di Campiglio in the Val di Sole. Check your price and book online →

How long does it take from Malpensa to Tonale?

About 3 h 10 for the 210 km from Malpensa, on the motorway past Milan to Bergamo and then up the Val Camonica. From Milan city it takes about 3 hours, from Linate about 2 h 45 and from Bergamo about 2 h 10. Weekend traffic or snow can add 20 to 40 minutes.

Which airport is closest to Passo del Tonale?

Bergamo Orio al Serio is the closest, about 2 h 10 by car and the cheapest transfer, from €420. Linate is about 2 h 45 and Malpensa about 3 h 10. Verona Airport is about 2 h 45 by car; transfers from Verona are on request.

Can you pick us up at Malpensa and drive straight to Tonale?

Yes. The driver follows your flight in real time, waits inside arrivals at Terminal 1 or 2 with a name board, includes 60 minutes of free waiting after landing and drives straight to Tonale without going into Milan.

Is the road to Passo del Tonale open in winter?

Yes. Tonale is itself a mountain pass, on the border between Lombardy and Trentino, and the road over it is kept open all winter. After very heavy snowfall chains can be required or the road can close for a few hours; our cars carry winter tyres and chains and we follow the road reports on the day.

Do you use the Gavia Pass?

Not in winter. The Gavia Pass between Ponte di Legno and Bormio is closed from autumn to late spring, so in the ski season Bormio and Livigno are reached through the Valtellina. In winter we always drive to Tonale through the Val Camonica, or from Lake Como over the Aprica Pass, which is also open all year.

Is there a train from Milan to Tonale?

There is no train to the pass. You can take a train from Milan to Brescia, the local line up the Val Camonica to Edolo and then a bus to Ponte di Legno and Tonale: four hours or more with changes. A private car takes about 3 hours to your hotel door.

Do you drive to Ponte di Legno and Madonna di Campiglio?

Yes. Milan to Ponte di Legno starts from €535 and Malpensa to Ponte di Legno from €640 per car. From Tonale, Madonna di Campiglio is about an hour away down the Val di Sole; transfers between the two are on request, and Campiglio has its own page.

Do you also drive from Tonale back to Malpensa?

Yes. Tonale to Milan city starts from €610, to Malpensa from €695, to Linate from €580 and to Bergamo from €445 per car. For an afternoon flight from Malpensa, leave Tonale about five and a half hours before take-off.

Do you drive from Lake Como to Tonale?

Yes. Tremezzo to Tonale starts from €520, Bellagio from €650 and Como from €725 per car, about 3 to 3 h 35, through the Valtellina and over the Aprica Pass.

Can you take our skis?

Yes. Ski and snowboard bags fit in the Mercedes V-Class together with the luggage of up to 6 passengers. Tell us how many ski bags you have when you book so we send the right car.

Do you provide child seats?

Yes. Baby seats, child seats and boosters are free of charge on long journeys such as Milan to Tonale. Tell us the age of each child when you book so we can prepare the right seats.

Is MilanobyCar a local company?

Yes. MilanobyCar is a licensed NCC private hire company based in Milan since 1993, run by Adrian and a small team. We are not a global platform or a booking app: you deal with the same people from the first email to the end of your trip. When we work with trusted local partner chauffeurs, MilanobyCar remains responsible for your booking.

Which Airport for Tonale: Bergamo, Linate or Malpensa?

Bergamo is the closest Milan airport to Passo del Tonale, about 2 h 10 by car, and it is also the cheapest transfer, from €420. Linate is about 2 h 45 and Malpensa about 3 h 10. Malpensa has the most long-haul and international flights, so many of our guests land there and drive straight to the Val Camonica. Whichever airport you fly into, we meet you inside arrivals and drive you to the door of your hotel.

Passo del Tonale, Ponte di Legno and the Presena Glacier

Passo del Tonale lies at 1,883 m on the border between Lombardy and Trentino. Its slopes are linked by lift with Ponte di Legno and Temù on the Lombardy side, forming the Pontedilegno-Tonale ski area, and a cable car climbs to the Presena Glacier at about 3,000 m, where the season starts early and ends late. The pass is high and open, so the resort is known for reliable snow from late autumn to spring.

Practical Tips: Winter Roads, Closed Passes and the Drive Back

The road over the Tonale Pass is kept open all winter; after heavy snowfall chains can be required for a few hours, and our cars are equipped for winter. The Gavia Pass towards Bormio is closed from autumn to late spring, so in winter Bormio and Livigno are reached through the Valtellina, never over the Gavia. For an afternoon flight from Malpensa, we usually suggest leaving Tonale about five and a half hours before take-off, and about four and a half hours for Bergamo.
