Malpensa or Milan to Tignes by Private Car: About 4¾ Hours in Winter

A private transfer from Malpensa to Tignes covers about 400 km in winter and takes around 4 h 40: motorway to Turin, the Fréjus tunnel into France, the Maurienne valley to Albertville, then up the Tarentaise through Moûtiers and Bourg-Saint-Maurice, past the Chevril dam to Tignes Le Lac at 2,100 m. From central Milan the time is about the same, from Linate about 4 h 55 and from Bergamo about 5 h 10. The price is for the whole car, not per person, and includes fuel, motorway tolls and parking.

In summer, when the Little St Bernard Pass is open (usually from June to October), we drive through the Aosta Valley and over the pass straight down to Bourg-Saint-Maurice, and the trip takes just under 4 hours. From late autumn to late spring the pass is closed, and the Fréjus is the fastest way in. Geneva and Chambéry are closer, but if your flight lands in Milan, or you are combining the Alps with Milan or Lake Como, a private car from Malpensa saves you a second flight and a train-and-bus connection via Bourg-Saint-Maurice.

We drive to every part of Tignes: Tignes Le Lac, Le Lavachet, Val Claret, Tignes 1800 and Tignes les Brevières, and on to Val d’Isère in the same Espace Killy ski area. For chalets on private or steep roads, send us the address and we plan the drop-off with you. Check your price and book online →

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions — Malpensa and Milan to Tignes

How much does a private transfer from Malpensa to Tignes cost?

In winter a private transfer from Malpensa Airport to Tignes starts from €1,215 per car for a Mercedes E-Class with up to 2 passengers, and from €1,320 for the Mercedes V-Class with up to 6 passengers. From Milan city it starts from €1,235 (V-Class €1,345), from Linate from €1,280 and from Bergamo Airport from €1,475. In summer, when the Little St Bernard Pass is open, the route is shorter and the price is lower. Night-time transfers, Christmas, New Year, February weekends and public holidays are priced differently. The price is per car and includes fuel, motorway tolls and parking; the Fréjus tunnel toll is not included.

How long does it take from Malpensa to Tignes?

In winter about 4 h 40 for the 400 km from Malpensa, via Turin, the Fréjus tunnel, the Maurienne valley, Albertville and Bourg-Saint-Maurice. In summer, over the Little St Bernard Pass, just under 4 hours. From Linate add about 15 minutes and from Bergamo about 30. Saturday traffic in the Tarentaise valley can add 30 to 60 minutes.

Which route do you take from Milan to Tignes in winter?

The Little St Bernard Pass is closed from late autumn to late spring, so in the ski season we take the motorway to Turin, the Fréjus tunnel and the A43 down the Maurienne valley to Albertville, then up the Tarentaise through Moûtiers and Bourg-Saint-Maurice. If the Fréjus is closed we use the Mont Blanc tunnel via Chamonix. In summer we cross the Little St Bernard Pass.

Is Malpensa or Geneva better for Tignes?

Chambéry is the closest airport, about 2 hours by car, but has mostly seasonal weekend flights; Geneva and Lyon are about 3 hours. Malpensa is about 4 h 40 in winter and is the right choice when your flight lands in Milan or you combine the Alps with Milan or Lake Como. Transfers from Geneva, Chambéry and Lyon are on request.

Can you pick us up at Malpensa and drive straight to Tignes?

Yes. The driver follows your flight in real time, waits inside arrivals at Terminal 1 or 2 with a name board, includes 60 minutes of free waiting after landing and drives straight to Tignes without stopping in Milan, with a coffee stop on the way if you like.

Do you drive to Val Claret, Tignes 1800 and Val d’Isère?

Yes. Malpensa to Val Claret starts from €1,220 and Milan city to Val Claret from €1,240 per car. We drive to Tignes Le Lac, Le Lavachet, Val Claret, Tignes 1800 and Les Brevières. Val d’Isère has its own page.

Do we need a passport to go from Milan to Tignes?

Italy and France are both in the Schengen area, so there is normally no border control, but checks can happen at the Fréjus tunnel. Every passenger should carry a valid passport or national ID card.

Is there a train from Milan to Tignes?

There is no direct train. From Milan you need trains via Turin and Chambéry to Bourg-Saint-Maurice and then a bus up to Tignes, usually seven hours or more with several changes. A private car takes about 4 h 40 to your door with no changes.

Can you take our skis?

Yes. Ski and snowboard bags fit in the Mercedes V-Class together with the luggage of up to 6 passengers. Tell us how many ski bags you have when you book so we send the right car.

Do you also drive from Tignes back to Malpensa?

Yes. Tignes to Malpensa starts from €1,255, to Milan city from €1,270, to Linate from €1,325 and to Bergamo from €1,440 per car in winter. For an afternoon flight from Malpensa, leave Tignes about seven and a half hours before take-off.

Do you drive from Lake Como to Tignes?

Yes. Como to Tignes starts from €1,095, Tremezzo from €1,180 and Bellagio from €1,205 per car in winter, about 5 h 10 to 5 h 25.

Are your cars equipped for French winter roads?

Yes. From November to March French mountain roads require winter tyres or chains, and our cars carry both. The road above Bourg-Saint-Maurice climbs to 2,100 m, so we plan extra time when it snows.

Do you provide child seats?

Yes. Baby seats, child seats and boosters are free of charge on long journeys such as Malpensa to Tignes. Tell us the age of each child when you book so we can prepare the right seats.

Is MilanobyCar a local company?

Yes. MilanobyCar is a licensed NCC private hire company based in Milan since 1993, run by Adrian and a small team. We are not a global platform or a booking app: you deal with the same people from the first email to the end of your trip. When we work with trusted local partner chauffeurs, MilanobyCar remains responsible for your booking.

Which Airport for Tignes: Malpensa, Geneva or Chambéry?

Chambéry is the closest airport to Tignes, about 2 hours by car, but has mostly seasonal weekend flights. Geneva and Lyon are about 3 hours. Milan Malpensa is about 4 h 40 in winter and just under 4 hours in summer. Malpensa makes sense when your long-haul flight lands in Milan, when you combine the Alps with Milan or Lake Como, or when there is no convenient connection to Geneva: a private car door to door avoids a second flight or a train and bus via Bourg-Saint-Maurice.

Winter and Summer Routes from Milan

The shortest road from Milan to Tignes crosses the Little St Bernard Pass from La Thuile to Bourg-Saint-Maurice, but it is closed from late autumn to late spring. In the ski season the fastest route is the motorway to Turin, the Fréjus tunnel and the A43 down the Maurienne valley to Albertville, almost all motorway with no mountain pass; the Mont Blanc tunnel via Chamonix is our alternative if the Fréjus is closed. The Italy–France border is inside the tunnel: both countries are in the Schengen area, but every passenger needs a valid passport or national ID card.

Practical Tips: Saturdays, Ski Bags and the Drive Back

Saturday is change-over day in the Tarentaise, and the road between Albertville and Bourg-Saint-Maurice can be slow in both directions, so we plan extra time. Tell us how many ski bags you travel with so we send the V-Class if needed. For an afternoon flight from Malpensa in winter, we usually suggest leaving Tignes about seven and a half hours before take-off.
