Malpensa or Milan to Val Thorens by Private Car: About 4½ Hours

A private transfer from Malpensa to Val Thorens covers about 385 km and takes around 4 h 25: motorway to Turin and up the Susa valley, the Fréjus tunnel into France, then the Maurienne valley to Albertville and Moûtiers, and the 37 km road up the Belleville valley past Saint-Martin-de-Belleville and Les Menuires to Val Thorens at 2,300 m. From central Milan the time is about the same, from Linate about 4 h 40 and from Bergamo about 4 h 55. The price is for the whole car, not per person, and includes fuel, motorway tolls and parking; the Fréjus tunnel toll is not included.

It is motorway almost all the way and the fastest route in every season, so we use it all year; the Little St Bernard Pass is closed from autumn to late spring, and the Mont Blanc tunnel via Chamonix is our alternative if the Fréjus is closed. Geneva and Chambéry are closer to Val Thorens, but if your flight lands in Milan, or you are combining the Alps with Milan or Lake Como, a private car from Malpensa saves you a second flight and a train-and-bus connection through Moûtiers.

Val Thorens is a largely car-free resort: we drive to the door of your hotel or residence wherever access is allowed, otherwise to the nearest drop-off point, and help with the luggage. We also drive to Les Menuires and Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, and to Méribel and Courchevel in the same 3 Vallées ski area. Check your price and book online →

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions — Malpensa and Milan to Val Thorens

How much does a private transfer from Malpensa to Val Thorens cost?

A private transfer from Malpensa Airport to Val Thorens starts from €1,160 per car for a Mercedes E-Class with up to 2 passengers, and from €1,265 for the Mercedes V-Class with up to 6 passengers. From Milan city it starts from €1,180 (V-Class €1,285), from Linate from €1,225 and from Bergamo Airport from €1,420. Night-time transfers, Christmas, New Year, February weekends and public holidays are priced differently. The price is per car, not per person, and includes fuel, motorway tolls and parking; the Fréjus tunnel toll is not included. Enter your trip in the booking form to see the exact price for your date.

How long does it take from Malpensa to Val Thorens?

About 4 h 25 for the 385 km from Malpensa, via Turin, the Fréjus tunnel, the Maurienne valley, Albertville, Moûtiers and the Belleville valley. From Milan city the time is about the same, from Linate about 4 h 40 and from Bergamo about 4 h 55. Saturday traffic in the Tarentaise valley can add 30 to 60 minutes.

Which route do you take from Milan to Val Thorens in winter?

We drive via Turin and the Fréjus tunnel all year round: it is motorway almost all the way to Moûtiers and the fastest route in every season, followed by 37 km of mountain road up the Belleville valley. The Little St Bernard Pass is closed from autumn to late spring, and the Mont Blanc tunnel via Chamonix is our alternative when the Fréjus is closed.

Is Malpensa or Geneva better for Val Thorens?

Geneva is closer, about 2 h 30 by car, and Chambéry about 1 h 45. Malpensa is about 4 h 25, and makes sense when your long-haul flight lands in Milan, or when you combine the Alps with Milan or Lake Como.

Can you pick us up at Malpensa and drive straight to Val Thorens?

Yes. The driver follows your flight in real time, waits inside arrivals at Terminal 1 or 2 with a name board, includes 60 minutes of free waiting after landing and drives straight to Val Thorens without going into Milan.

Can you drive to our hotel door in Val Thorens?

Val Thorens is a largely car-free resort. We drive to the door of your hotel or residence wherever vehicle access is allowed, otherwise to the nearest drop-off point, and help you with the luggage. Send us the name of your accommodation when you book and we plan the drop-off in advance.

Do we need a passport to go from Milan to Val Thorens?

Italy and France are both in the Schengen area, so there is normally no passport control in the Fréjus tunnel, but checks can happen and every passenger needs a valid passport or national ID card.

Do you drive to Les Menuires, Saint-Martin-de-Belleville and Méribel?

Yes. Malpensa to Les Menuires starts from €1,130, Milan to Les Menuires from €1,150 and Malpensa to Saint-Martin-de-Belleville from €1,110 per car. Méribel and Courchevel have their own pages.

Do you also drive from Val Thorens back to Malpensa?

Yes. Val Thorens to Malpensa starts from €1,200, to Milan city from €1,215, to Linate from €1,265 and to Bergamo from €1,390 per car. For an afternoon flight from Malpensa, leave Val Thorens about seven and a half hours before take-off.

Do you drive from Lake Como to Val Thorens?

Yes. Como to Val Thorens starts from €1,045, Tremezzo from €1,125 and Bellagio from €1,135 per car.

Are your cars equipped for French winter roads?

Yes. From November to March French mountain roads require winter tyres or chains, and our cars carry both. The road up to Val Thorens climbs to 2,300 m, so we plan extra time when it snows.

Can you take our skis?

Yes. Ski and snowboard bags fit in the Mercedes V-Class together with the luggage of up to 6 passengers. Tell us how many ski bags you have when you book so we send the right car.

Do you provide child seats?

Yes. Baby seats, child seats and boosters are free of charge on long journeys such as Malpensa to Val Thorens. Tell us the age of each child when you book so we can prepare the right seats.

Is MilanobyCar a local company?

Yes. MilanobyCar is a licensed NCC private hire company based in Milan since 1993, run by Adrian and a small team. We are not a global platform or a booking app: you deal with the same people from the first email to the end of your trip. When we work with trusted local partner chauffeurs, MilanobyCar remains responsible for your booking.

Which Airport for Val Thorens: Malpensa, Geneva or Chambéry?

Chambéry is the closest airport to Val Thorens, about 1 h 45 by car, but has mostly seasonal weekend flights. Geneva is about 2 h 30 and Lyon about 2 h 45. Milan Malpensa is about 4 h 25. Malpensa makes sense when your long-haul flight lands in Milan, when you combine the Alps with Milan or Lake Como, or when there is no convenient connection to Geneva: a private car door to door avoids a second flight or a train and bus through Moûtiers.

Why We Drive via the Fréjus Tunnel

From Milan there are three roads into the Tarentaise valley. The fastest, all year round, is the motorway to Turin, the Fréjus tunnel and the A43 down the Maurienne valley to Albertville: almost all motorway, with no mountain pass. The Mont Blanc tunnel via Chamonix is our alternative when the Fréjus is closed for maintenance, and the Little St Bernard Pass from La Thuile is closed from autumn to late spring. The Italy–France border is inside the tunnel; both countries are in the Schengen area, but every passenger needs a valid passport or national ID card.

Practical Tips: Saturdays, a Car-Free Resort and the Drive Back

Saturday is change-over day in the 3 Vallées, and the road between Albertville and Moûtiers can be slow in both directions, so we plan extra time. Val Thorens is largely car-free, so send us the name of your hotel or residence and we plan the drop-off point in advance. Tell us how many ski bags you travel with so we send the V-Class if needed. For an afternoon flight from Malpensa, we usually suggest leaving Val Thorens about seven and a half hours before take-off.
