Train or Private Car from Milan to Megève?
There is no railway to Megève. The usual public route is a train from Milan to Geneva, about four hours, then a bus or transfer of about an hour and a half, or a train to Sallanches and a taxi up the hill. With changes it easily takes five to six hours. A private car takes about 3 h 15 from Milan to your door, with no changes, which makes the difference with ski bags, children or a group of three to six people sharing one price.
The Mont Blanc Tunnel and the Border
The quickest route from Milan uses the Mont Blanc Tunnel between Courmayeur and Chamonix. The toll is not included in our price and is added to your quote; when the tunnel is closed at night or for maintenance we drive through the Great St Bernard Tunnel and Martigny. Italy and France are both in the Schengen area, so there is normally no passport control, but carry a valid passport or national ID card for possible checks at the tunnel.
Practical Tips: Chalets, Snow and the Drive Back
Many chalets in Megève are on steep, narrow roads above the village, so send us the exact address and we plan the drop-off in advance. Winter tyres or chains are compulsory in the mountains and our cars are equipped for snow. For an afternoon flight from Malpensa we usually suggest leaving Megève about five and a half hours before take-off.
