How long is the drive from Milan to Lugano?
About 1 h 10 for the 80 km from central Milan, about 1 hour from Malpensa and about 1 h 15 from Linate. At rush hour the A9 near Como and the Chiasso border can add 20 to 30 minutes.
Which airport is closest to Lugano?
Malpensa, about one hour by car, is the most convenient major airport for Lugano. Linate takes about 1 h 15 and Bergamo about 1 h 20. Lugano Agno airport has very few scheduled flights.
Do we need a passport to go from Milan to Lugano?
Switzerland is in the Schengen area, so there is normally no passport control, but it is not in the EU and customs checks can happen at Chiasso. Every passenger should carry a valid passport or national ID card, and goods above the duty-free allowance must be declared.
Is the Swiss motorway vignette included?
Yes. Our cars already carry the Swiss vignette, and fuel, motorway tolls and parking are all included in the price you confirm.
Can you wait for us during a business meeting in Lugano?
Yes. A car at your disposal for the day starts from €620, depending on the type of service and the distances, with extra hours at €80 per hour. The driver waits while you work and takes you back to Milan or Malpensa.
Can we stop at FoxTown on the way?
Yes. FoxTown in Mendrisio is right next to the motorway, about 55 minutes from Milan. Milan to FoxTown starts from €175 per car, and a stop on the way to Lugano is added to the quote.

The Mercedes E-Class takes up to 2 passengers with 2 large suitcases and cabin bags. The Mercedes V-Class takes up to 6 passengers with their luggage, at the same price for 1 to 6 people. With several large suitcases we recommend the V-Class rather than the S-Class, whose boot is smaller.

Train or Private Car from Milan to Lugano?
Direct trains run from Milano Centrale to Lugano in about 1 h 15, so for one person with light luggage staying near Lugano station the train works well. The private car takes about 1 h 10 from door to door with no luggage to carry, and is the better choice from Malpensa, with children, for villas and hotels on the lake or the hills, for late arrivals and for a group sharing one price.
The Swiss Border and Customs
The route crosses into Switzerland at Chiasso. Switzerland is in the Schengen area but not in the EU, so customs checks can happen: every passenger needs a valid passport or national ID card, and goods above the Swiss duty-free allowance, including large amounts of cash, must be declared. The Swiss motorway vignette is already on our cars and included in the price.
Practical Tips: Rush Hour, Lake Roads and the Drive Back
The A9 between Milan and Chiasso is busy with commuters in the morning towards Switzerland and in the late afternoon towards Italy, so we plan around the peaks. For an afternoon flight from Malpensa we usually suggest leaving Lugano about three hours before take-off, and about three and a half hours for Linate.
