Malpensa or Milan to St. Moritz by Private Car: About 3 Hours

A private transfer from Milan to St. Moritz covers about 180 km and takes around 3 hours from central Milan or Linate, about 3 h 15 from Malpensa and about 2 h 45 from Bergamo. Many of our winter guests never go into Milan at all: the driver meets them inside arrivals at the airport and drives straight along Lake Como, through Chiavenna and over the Maloja Pass to the door of their hotel. The price is for the whole car, not per person, and includes fuel, motorway tolls, the Swiss vignette and parking.

By train the trip from Malpensa means a Malpensa Express into Milan, a regional train to Tirano and the Bernina Express to St. Moritz: beautiful, but around six hours with three changes and your ski bags on every platform. By car it is three hours with no changes, and in winter our drivers know when the Maloja and the Bernina are open and how long the snow makes each road.

Badrutt’s Palace, the Kulm, the Carlton, Suvretta House and most hotels in St. Moritz, Celerina and Pontresina have a drive-up entrance, so we drop you at the door and the hotel takes care of the luggage. Check your price and book online →

How long does it take from Malpensa to St. Moritz?

About 3 h 15 for the 230 km from Malpensa to St. Moritz, along Lake Como, through Chiavenna and over the Maloja Pass. From Milan city and Linate it takes about 3 hours, and from Bergamo about 2 h 45. Snow on the pass or traffic on Lake Como can add 20 to 40 minutes.

Which airport is closest to St. Moritz?

Bergamo, Linate and Malpensa in Milan and Zurich are all between about 2 h 45 and 3 h 15 by car. Bergamo is the shortest drive, Malpensa has the most international flights. Engadin Airport in Samedan, near St. Moritz, is only for private jets and helicopters.

Is the Maloja Pass open in winter?

Yes. The Maloja Pass is kept open all year and is the usual winter route from Milan to St. Moritz. After heavy snowfall chains can be required for a few hours; our cars are equipped for winter. The Bernina Pass via Tirano is the alternative route.

Can you pick us up at Malpensa and drive straight to St. Moritz?

Yes, and most of our winter guests do exactly that. The driver follows your flight in real time, waits inside arrivals at Terminal 1 or 2 with a name board, includes 60 minutes of free waiting after landing and drives straight to St. Moritz without stopping in Milan.

Is there a train from Malpensa to St. Moritz?

Yes, but with changes: the Malpensa Express to Milan, a regional train to Tirano and the Bernina Express to St. Moritz, about six hours in total. A private car takes about 3 h 15 to your hotel door with no changes.

Do we need a passport to go from Milan to St. Moritz?

Switzerland is in the Schengen area, so there is normally no passport control, but it is not in the EU and customs checks can happen at the border at Castasegna. Every passenger should carry a valid passport or national ID card, and goods above the duty-free allowance must be declared.

Can you take our skis?

Yes. Ski and snowboard bags fit in the Mercedes V-Class together with the luggage of up to 6 passengers. Tell us how many ski bags you have when you book so we send the right car.

Do you drive to Pontresina, Celerina and Samedan?

Yes. Milan to Celerina starts from €590, Pontresina and Samedan from €600 per car. We drive to every village and chalet in the Upper Engadin and to Engadin Airport in Samedan.

Do you also drive from St. Moritz back to Malpensa?

Yes. St. Moritz to Malpensa starts from €605, to Milan city from €585, to Linate from €565 and to Bergamo from €560 per car. For an afternoon flight from Malpensa, leave St. Moritz about six hours before take-off.

Do you drive from Lake Como to St. Moritz?

Yes. Varenna to St. Moritz starts from €330, Tremezzo from €355, Bellagio from €490 and Como from €510 per car. From the northern part of the lake the drive takes about two hours.

Do you provide child seats?

Which Airport for St. Moritz: Malpensa, Linate, Bergamo or Zurich?

The closest international airports to St. Moritz are the three Milan airports, all about 2 h 45 to 3 h 15 by car, and Zurich, about 3 h 15. Malpensa has the most long-haul and international flights, Linate the most connections within Europe, and Bergamo the low-cost flights and the shortest drive. Engadin Airport in Samedan, five minutes from St. Moritz, takes only private jets and helicopters. For most guests flying in from abroad, Malpensa with a private car straight to the hotel is the simplest option.

The Maloja, the Bernina and the Swiss Border in Winter

The Maloja Pass is open all year and is the usual winter route from Milan; after heavy snowfall the canton may require chains for a few hours, and our cars are equipped for it. The Bernina Pass via Tirano is the alternative. The route crosses into Switzerland at Castasegna: Switzerland is in the Schengen area but not in the EU, so customs checks can happen and every passenger needs a valid passport or national ID card. Goods above the Swiss duty-free allowance must be declared.

Practical Tips: High Season, Ski Bags and the Drive Back

Between Christmas and New Year and on February weekends the Engadin is at its busiest, so book early and tell us how many ski bags you travel with. For an afternoon flight from Malpensa we usually suggest leaving St. Moritz about six hours before take-off, and about five and a half hours for Linate or Bergamo.
