Private Day Trip from Milan

Roman Aosta and the Alps, from Milan

Aosta was founded by the Romans as Augusta Praetoria after the campaign against the Salassi in 25 BC, and the street plan of the colony is still there. The Arch of Augustus stands outside the old walls, the double Porta Praetoria still marks the eastern entrance, and the 22-metre facade of the Roman theatre rises above the rooftops with the mountains behind it. Add the Romanesque cloister of Sant’Orso and you have one of the most rewarding day trips from Milan for anyone interested in history.

Aosta is about 185 km from Milan, two hours on the A4 and A5 motorways, and the valley is lined with castles. The Fort of Bard, at the narrowest point of the valley, held up Napoleon’s army in 1800 and today houses the Museum of the Alps; it makes a natural first stop. The price is per vehicle, not per person: from €1,035 with an E-Class for two, from €1,165 with a V-Class for up to six.

Frequently Asked Questions

Aosta Day Trip from Milan — FAQ

How far is Aosta from Milan?
About 185 km. By car it takes around two hours on the A4 and A5 motorways, a little more with traffic around Milan. The Fort of Bard is right on the way, about 45 minutes before Aosta.
How much does a private day trip from Milan to Aosta cost?
From €1,035 per car with a Mercedes E-Class (up to 2 passengers) and from €1,165 with a V-Class (up to 6), for 10 hours with distance included. Weekends are +20%, major holidays +50%, extra hours €75 or €85.
Can the car drive into the centre of Aosta?
The Roman centre is compact and largely closed to traffic, so your driver drops you by the Arch of Augustus or near Porta Praetoria and collects you at an agreed point. Everything inside the walls is within an easy walk.
Do the Fort of Bard and the Roman sites need tickets?
Yes, the Fort of Bard museums and some of the Roman sites in Aosta are ticketed, and opening days vary through the year. Check before you travel, or ask us and we can plan the order of visits around them.
Can we combine Aosta with Courmayeur or the mountains?
Yes. Courmayeur, at the foot of Mont Blanc, is 35 km further up the valley; with an extra hour or two the day can include both. We also have a separate Courmayeur and Mont Blanc day trip built around the Skyway cable car.
Is a guide included?
No. Your driver is not a licensed tour guide and does not guide inside the sites, but after years on these roads can recommend the best viewpoints, places and restaurants and give practical tips. A licensed local guide for Roman Aosta can be booked on request.

Aosta by private car or by train?

The train from Milan to Aosta usually needs a change at Chivasso or Ivrea and takes well over two hours, and it stops nowhere near the Fort of Bard. By car you leave from your hotel, reach Aosta in about two hours, and can stop at the fort and a castle on the same day without timetables.

Why Aosta is worth the drive

Few towns in northern Italy show their Roman past as clearly. The walls, the gate, the arch and the theatre all stand within a few hundred metres of each other, and the setting, with peaks above 3,000 m on every side, is unlike any other Roman town. It works in every season; in winter there is snow on the mountains and the town is quiet.

How much is an Aosta day trip?

MilanobyCar charges a fixed price per car: from €1,035 for two passengers in a Mercedes E-Class and from €1,165 for up to six in a V-Class, for 10 hours including driver, fuel, tolls and parking. The exact price for your date appears in the booking form.
