Mont Blanc from Milan, close enough to touch
Courmayeur lies at the top of the Aosta Valley, right under the Italian side of Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps. From Entrèves, just above the village, the Skyway Monte Bianco cable car rises in two stages, with cabins that rotate as they climb, from 1,300 m to the Pavillon at about 2,200 m and then to Punta Helbronner at 3,466 m, where a terrace looks across glaciers to the Dent du Géant, the Grandes Jorasses and the summit of Mont Blanc itself. For many visitors it is the most spectacular of all day trips from Milan.
Courmayeur is about 220 km from Milan, around two and a half hours on the A4 and A5 motorways, which leaves plenty of time on the mountain and in the village. The price is per vehicle, not per person: from €1,135 with an E-Class for two, from €1,275 with a V-Class for up to six. The Skyway depends on season and weather, so we check it with you before the day.

Up the valley past castles and vineyards
After Ivrea the A5 follows the Dora Baltea river into the Aosta Valley, past the Fort of Bard and a string of medieval castles, with the high peaks appearing ahead.
Pontal d’Entrèves to Punta Helbronner
Your driver drops you at the valley station. The first cabin climbs to the Pavillon, where there is a botanical garden and a restaurant; the second rises to Punta Helbronner at 3,466 m, on the border with France, for the circular terrace and the view over the glaciers.
Courmayeur village
Back down in the valley, lunch in Courmayeur. The local menu is Alpine: Fontina cheese, polenta, soups and game, with wines from the Aosta Valley.
Via Roma, or a valley drive
Stroll Via Roma, the pedestrian main street with its shops and cafés, or let your driver take you a short way into Val Ferret or Val Veny for a quieter view of the massif.

Courmayeur by private car or by train?
There is no railway to Courmayeur: the line from Turin stops at Aosta, and the last stretch is by bus, so from Milan it is a long journey with changes. A private car takes you from your hotel to the Skyway valley station in about two and a half hours and waits for you there.
What to know before going up Mont Blanc
The Skyway is the main reason to go, so plan around it: check the maintenance dates, look at the weather the day before, and go up early. Take a warm jacket, sunglasses and sun cream. The second section reaches 3,466 m, so take it slowly at the top. If clouds hide the summit, the Pavillon at about 2,200 m is often still worthwhile.
