Two villages facing each other across the lake

Varenna and Bellagio look at each other across the widest part of Lake Como. This day reaches the lake from the east: instead of Como, the car takes the SS36 through the Brianza to Lecco and follows the eastern shore of the Lecco branch to Varenna, a small village of coloured houses stacked above a tiny harbour. After the morning there, a passenger ferry of about a quarter of an hour carries you over to Bellagio. It is a quieter, more village-focused alternative to the Como-based day trips from Milan.

While you cross on the passenger boat, your driver brings the car round by road via Lecco and meets you in Bellagio, so the day ends there without going back. If you prefer the car to cross with you, it can travel on the car ferry, with the ticket paid on the day. The price is per vehicle, not per person: from €600 with an E-Class for two, from €680 with a V-Class for up to six.

Frequently Asked Questions

Varenna & Bellagio Day Trip from Milan — FAQ

How far is Varenna from Milan?
About 80 km. By car it takes around 1 hour 15 minutes on the SS36 via Lecco and then the eastern lake road, more on summer weekends. From Bellagio back to Milan via Lecco is about 1 hour 30 minutes.
How do we get from Varenna to Bellagio?
By the passenger ferry, which takes about 15–20 minutes. While you cross, your driver drives round via Lecco, about an hour, and meets you in Bellagio. If you want the car on board with you, it can take the car ferry; that ticket is paid on the day.
How much does a private day trip from Milan to Varenna and Bellagio cost?
From €600 per car with a Mercedes E-Class (up to 2 passengers) and from €680 with a V-Class (up to 6), for 8 hours with 150 km included. Saturdays and Sundays are +20%, major holidays +50%, and extra hours cost €75 (E-Class) or €85 (V-Class).
How is this different from the other Lake Como day trips?
It approaches the lake from Lecco rather than Como and focuses on two villages instead of a long drive along the shore. You see Varenna, which the Como-based tours usually skip, and you cross the lake by boat, but with no need to come back to your starting pier.
Can the car drive into Varenna?
The village is small, with very limited parking and narrow lanes down to the water, so your driver drops you at the edge of the centre and collects you at a time you agree, or meets you directly in Bellagio.
Is a guide included?
No. Your driver is not a licensed tour guide and does not guide you inside the sites, but after years on these roads he knows Varenna and Bellagio well and can recommend the best viewpoints, places and restaurants, and give you practical tips for the day. A licensed local guide can be booked on request.

Varenna and Bellagio by private car or by train?

There is a train from Milan to Varenna-Esino taking about an hour, and the station is a short walk from the village. Bellagio has no station, so you add the ferry, and coming home means a ferry back to Varenna and the train again. A private car starts at your hotel, avoids the return crossing and brings you home from Bellagio directly.

What makes Varenna worth the detour?

Varenna is smaller and quieter than Bellagio, with its harbour, the promenade over the water and two villas with lakeside gardens. Above the village stands the Castello di Vezio, and just south of it the Fiumelatte, about 250 m long and often described as the shortest river in Italy, flows from spring to autumn.

How much is a Varenna and Bellagio day trip?

MilanobyCar charges a fixed price per car: from €600 for two passengers in a Mercedes E-Class and from €680 for up to six in a V-Class, for 8 hours with 150 km included. Ferry tickets are extra. Weekends +20%, holidays +50%, extra hours €75 or €85.
