Private Day Trip from Milan

St. Moritz from Milan, in a single day

St. Moritz sits at about 1,800 metres in the Upper Engadine, the high Swiss valley of lakes and larch woods where winter tourism in the Alps began in 1864. It hosted the Winter Olympics in 1928 and 1948, and it is still a place of grand hotels, a frozen lake used for polo and horse racing in winter, and clear, dry light. From Milan it is about 175 km, roughly three hours each way, which makes it one of the longer and more spectacular day trips from Milan.

The drive is half the point. The classic road follows the eastern shore of Lake Como to Chiavenna, climbs the Val Bregaglia into Switzerland and tops out at the Maloja Pass, where the Engadine opens up with the lakes of Sils and Silvaplana. The alternative runs through Valtellina and over the Bernina Pass, so you can go one way and come back the other. The price is per vehicle, not per person: from €1,085 with an E-Class for two, from €1,225 with a V-Class for up to six.

Along the eastern shore to Chiavenna

The road follows the Lario shore past Lecco and Varenna, then leaves the lake at Colico for Chiavenna, an old trading town at the foot of the Splugen and Maloja roads, known for its crotti, the cool natural cellars in the rock. A good place for coffee.

St. Moritz

The lake, the village and lunch

Frequently Asked Questions

St. Moritz Day Trip from Milan — FAQ

How far is St. Moritz from Milan?
About 175 km via Lake Como, Chiavenna and the Maloja Pass, roughly three hours each way depending on traffic and the season. The route via Valtellina and the Bernina Pass takes a little longer, which is why many guests go one way and return the other.
How much does a private day trip from Milan to St. Moritz cost?
From €1,085 per car with a Mercedes E-Class (up to 2 passengers) and from €1,225 with a V-Class (up to 6), for 12 hours with distance included. Weekends are +20%, major holidays +50%, extra hours €75 or €85.
Do we need a passport?
Yes. St. Moritz is in Switzerland, so every passenger needs a passport or an ID card valid for travel. Switzerland is in the Schengen area, but checks at the border are possible and non-EU visitors should check their own entry rules.
Are the mountain passes open in winter?
The Maloja Pass road is kept open in winter, though heavy snow can close it for some hours and winter tyres or chains are required. In bad conditions your driver chooses the safest road and adapts the timing.
Can we go to St. Moritz one way only?
Yes. If you are staying in the Engadine, book a private transfer from Milan to St. Moritz instead of the day trip: same cars and drivers, priced for a one-way journey.
Is a guide included?
No. Your driver is not a licensed tour guide and does not guide inside the sites, but after years on these roads can recommend the best viewpoints, places and restaurants and give you practical tips along the way. A licensed local guide can be booked on request.

St. Moritz by private car or by train?

There is no direct train: from Milan you change at Tirano for the Rhaetian Railway, or go via Chiavenna and a Swiss PostBus over the Maloja. Either way it is a long day of connections. By car the journey starts at your hotel door, you stop where you like on Lake Como and in the Bregaglia, and you can return by a different pass.

What to know before a St. Moritz day

It is a long day, so an early start pays off. Bring a passport or ID card and a warm layer: at 1,800 m the air is cool even in summer. The currency is the Swiss franc and prices are Swiss, so a card is the easiest way to pay. In late spring and late autumn some hotels, restaurants and lifts close between seasons.

How much is a St. Moritz day trip?

MilanobyCar charges a fixed price per car: from €1,085 for two passengers in a Mercedes E-Class and from €1,225 for up to six in a V-Class, for 12 hours including driver, fuel, tolls and parking. The exact price for your date appears in the booking form.
