Private Day Trip from Milan

Soncino and the castles of the Lombard plain

Soncino stands on the Oglio river, on the old frontier between the Duchy of Milan and the Republic of Venice, and it still looks the part. Its Rocca was rebuilt for Galeazzo Maria Sforza from 1473 as a fortress with four towers and a moat; the town around it keeps its walls, brick palaces and frescoed churches, and belongs to the club of the Borghi più belli d’Italia. It is about 60 km from Milan, an hour by car, and one of the less expected day trips from Milan.

Soncino also has a place in the history of books: in 1488 the Soncino family of Jewish printers produced here the first complete printed Hebrew Bible, and their printing house is now a small museum. The plain around is dotted with castles, so we pair Soncino with the Visconti castle of Pandino, Bartolomeo Colleoni’s castle at Malpaga, or the old town of Crema. The price is per vehicle, not per person: from €600 with an E-Class for two, from €680 with a V-Class for up to six.

Frequently Asked Questions

Soncino Day Trip from Milan — FAQ

How far is Soncino from Milan?
About 60 km. By car it takes around an hour on the A35 Brebemi motorway, or a little longer on the old road through Pandino and Crema.
What is there to see in the Rocca?
The ramparts and walkways, the underground passages, the ravelin and the towers of a 15th-century Sforza fortress, plus a small archaeological museum inside. Allow about an hour and a half; there are steep stairs and uneven floors.
How much does a private day trip from Milan to Soncino cost?
From €600 per car with a Mercedes E-Class (up to 2 passengers) and from €680 with a V-Class (up to 6), for 8 hours with 150 km included. Saturdays and Sundays are +20%, major holidays +50%, and extra hours cost €75 with the E-Class or €85 with the V-Class.
Which other castles can we visit?
The Visconti castle of Pandino and Bartolomeo Colleoni’s castle at Malpaga are the classic pairings, both within about half an hour of Soncino. Crema, with its cathedral and Venetian-era centre, is another good afternoon.
Are the castles open every day?
Not always. The smaller castles and museums of the area keep limited opening days and hours, often weekends and afternoons, and some can only be visited on a guided tour. Tell us your date and we check and plan the order of the day accordingly.
Is a guide included?
No. Your driver is not a licensed tour guide and does not guide inside the sites, but with years of experience on these roads he can recommend the best places, viewpoints and restaurants and give you practical tips for the day. A licensed local guide for Soncino and the castles can be booked on request.

Soncino by private car or by train?

Soncino has no direct train from Milan, and the castles of the plain are spread across the countryside, so this is a trip that really needs a car. With a private driver you link Soncino, Pandino, Malpaga and Crema in one day without timetables.

Why go to Soncino?

This is medieval Lombardy without the crowds: a real moated fortress, a walled town of red brick and a museum that tells the story of early Hebrew printing. It suits families, history lovers and anyone who has already seen the lakes and wants a different side of the region.

How much is a Soncino day trip?

MilanobyCar charges a fixed price per car: from €600 for two passengers in a Mercedes E-Class and from €680 for up to six in a V-Class, for 8 hours with 150 km included, including driver, fuel, tolls and parking. There is room within the 150 km for a second castle or Crema. The exact price for your date appears in the booking form.
