The wine country closest to Milan

Oltrepò means “beyond the Po”: a triangle of the province of Pavia that rises from the river into the first folds of the Apennines, covered with vineyards, small castles and farm restaurants. Few visitors to Milan know it, yet it has more Pinot Noir than anywhere else in Italy, and its Pinot Noir grapes have long been used for classic-method sparkling wine. Today the Oltrepò Pavese Metodo Classico DOCG and the rosé version, sold under the Cruasé name, are the best reasons to come. The wine villages are only about an hour from the city, which makes this the most relaxed of our wine day trips from Milan.

A typical day includes two cellar visits, lunch at an agriturismo with salame di Varzi and a bottle of Bonarda, a drive through the hills of the Valle Versa and, on the way home, the Certosa di Pavia. Winery visits and tastings must be booked in advance and are not included in the price; we help you book them. You are not driving, so you can taste freely, but we still recommend pacing yourself and drinking responsibly. The price is per vehicle, not per person: from €600 with an E-Class for two, from €680 with a V-Class for up to six.

Milan to the Oltrepò Pavese: The Route

About 65 km south, around an hour: past the Certosa and Pavia, across the Po at the Becca bridge and into the hills between Broni, Canneto Pavese and Santa Maria della Versa. Short distances, so more time at the table and in the cellars.

Frequently Asked Questions

Oltrepò Pavese Wine Tour from Milan — FAQ

How far is the Oltrepò Pavese from Milan?
The wine villages are about 60–70 km south of Milan, around an hour by car via Pavia. It is the closest major wine area to the city, so the day has plenty of time for tastings and lunch.
How much does a private Oltrepò Pavese wine tour cost?
From €600 per car with a Mercedes E-Class (up to 2 passengers) and from €680 with a V-Class (up to 6), for 8 hours with 150 km included. Weekends are +20%, major holidays +50%, extra hours €75 (E) or €85 (V).
What is Cruasé?
Cruasé is a name owned by the local wine consortium for the rosé classic-method sparkling wine of the Oltrepò Pavese, made mainly from Pinot Noir with its second fermentation in the bottle. It is the local answer to rosé Champagne and Franciacorta, and well worth tasting at the source.
Are the tastings included?
No. Winery visits and tastings are booked in advance with each producer and paid directly to them. Most are family estates that receive visitors by appointment, so tell us your date and we help you choose and book.
Is a guide included?
No. Your driver speaks English and is not a licensed tour guide, so he does not guide inside the wineries or the Certosa. With years of experience on these roads, though, he can recommend producers, agriturismi and the most scenic roads through the hills, and give you practical tips along the way. A licensed local guide can be booked on request.
Can we combine it with Pavia or the Certosa?
Yes. Both are on the way, and the Certosa di Pavia makes a good stop on the way back. Pavia’s old town, with its covered bridge over the Ticino, can be added too, with extra hours if needed.

Oltrepò Pavese by private car or by train?

Trains from Milan reach Pavia, Voghera, Broni and Stradella, but the wineries are spread over the hills with almost no public transport. With a private car you go straight from your hotel to the first cellar, and after the tastings nobody has to drive home.

Why visit the Oltrepò Pavese?

It is the quiet alternative to the better-known wine regions: no crowds, honest prices at the agriturismi and producers who still pour their own wines. For sparkling wine lovers, tasting Pinot Noir Metodo Classico and Cruasé side by side with the still reds is a revelation, an hour from the centre of Milan.

How much is an Oltrepò Pavese day trip?

MilanobyCar charges a fixed price per car: from €600 for two passengers in a Mercedes E-Class and from €680 for up to six in a V-Class, for an 8-hour day with 150 km included, driver, fuel, tolls and parking. The exact price for your date appears in the booking form.
