Mantua from Milan: the Gonzaga city
For almost four centuries Mantua was ruled by the Gonzaga, who filled it with art: Andrea Mantegna painted the Camera degli Sposi for them in the Palazzo Ducale, and Giulio Romano designed and decorated Palazzo Te as their villa of pleasure. Together with the planned town of Sabbioneta, Mantua has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2008. It sits on lakes formed by the Mincio river, about 170 km from Milan, roughly two hours each way, so among our day trips from Milan this is a 10-hour one.
The Palazzo Ducale is vast, and the full ticket includes a compulsory time slot for the Camera degli Sposi, so we plan the day around it. The car takes you from the Castello di San Giorgio to Palazzo Te on the southern edge of the centre, and the drive home can pass through Sabbioneta. The price is per vehicle, not per person: from €985 with an E-Class for two, from €1,110 with a V-Class for up to six.

Your driver, your local insider. Our chauffeurs are not licensed tour guides and do not guide you inside museums or sites, but they know these places well from years on the road: ask them for the best viewpoints, where to eat, where to stroll and how to avoid the busiest spots. Pick-up at your hotel in Milan
Your driver meets you in the lobby. The A4 runs east past Brescia and Lake Garda towards Verona, then the A22 heads south through farmland to Mantua.
Palazzo Ducale and the Camera degli Sposi
Enter from Piazza Castello for the Castello di San Giorgio and Mantegna’s painted room, where the Gonzaga family looks down from the walls and an illusionistic oculus opens in the ceiling. Then the halls and courtyards of Corte Vecchia and Corte Nuova, entered from Piazza Sordello.
Tortelli di zucca and sbrisolona
Mantuan cooking is sweet and savoury: tortelli filled with pumpkin and amaretti, risotto alla pilota with pork, and the crumbly almond cake called sbrisolona. Your driver can suggest places and book a table.
Sant’Andrea and the squares
Leon Battista Alberti’s basilica of Sant’Andrea, then Piazza delle Erbe with the round Romanesque church of San Lorenzo and the Clock Tower.
Palazzo Te
Giulio Romano’s villa for Federico II Gonzaga, a short drive away: the Room of Cupid and Psyche and the Room of the Giants, where the walls seem to collapse around you. Or, instead, spend the late afternoon in Sabbioneta and return to Milan via Cremona.
Back to your hotel in Milan
Door-to-door return, or drop-off at Linate, Malpensa or Bergamo airport.

Mantua Day Trip from Milan — FAQ
Mantua by private car or by train?
There is no high-speed train from Milan to Mantua: regional trains take around two hours, sometimes with a change, which makes a day trip tiring. By private car the journey takes a similar time but door-to-door, and you can combine Mantua with Sabbioneta, Lake Garda or Cremona.
What to know before visiting Mantua
Mantua is compact and flat, with most sights within a 15-minute walk of Piazza Sordello; Palazzo Te is the exception, about 20 minutes on foot or a few by car. The essential step is booking the Camera degli Sposi slot early, especially at weekends.
How much is a Mantua day trip?
MilanobyCar charges a fixed price per car: from €985 for two passengers in a Mercedes E-Class and from €1,110 for up to six in a V-Class, for 10 hours with distance included, including driver, fuel, tolls and parking. Distance is included, so adding Sabbioneta changes only the time, not the kilometre count. The exact price for your date appears in the booking form.
