Lake Iseo from Milan, at a slower pace

Lake Iseo lies in the hills between Bergamo and Brescia, smaller and far less visited than Como or Garda, with mountains rising straight out of the water at its northern end. In the middle sits Monte Isola, which the lake’s own tourist board calls the largest lake island in Europe: a green ridge of olive terraces and woods, with small hamlets along the shore and no visitors’ cars at all. It is about 100 km from Milan, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes by motorway, and one of the most relaxed day trips from Milan.

Your driver takes you to Sulzano, where public ferries cross to Peschiera Maraglio in about five minutes, every 15 to 20 minutes, all year round. The car waits on the mainland while you explore the island on foot, by bicycle or on the little island bus, and is there at the pier when you come back. On the way home there is still time for the old centre of Iseo or a Franciacorta winery. The price is per vehicle, not per person: from €675 with an E-Class for two, from €760 with a V-Class for up to six.

Frequently Asked Questions

Lake Iseo Day Trip from Milan — FAQ

How far is Lake Iseo from Milan?
About 100 km to Sulzano, the ferry point for Monte Isola. By car it takes around 1 hour 15 minutes on the A4 motorway, a little more at rush hour. The town of Iseo is about ten minutes before Sulzano.
Can the car go across to Monte Isola?
No. Monte Isola is car-free: visitors’ cars and motorbikes cannot be taken across, and only a few authorised residents’ vehicles and a small public bus run on the island. Your driver drops you at the Sulzano ferry and waits for you on the mainland.
How much does a private day trip from Milan to Lake Iseo cost?
From €675 per car with a Mercedes E-Class (up to 2 passengers) and from €760 with a V-Class (up to 6), for 8 hours with the distance included. Weekends are +20%, major holidays +50%, extra hours €75 (E-Class) or €85 (V-Class). Ferry tickets are bought at the pier.
Do the ferries to Monte Isola run all year?
Yes. The Sulzano–Peschiera Maraglio and Sale Marasino–Carzano crossings run all year, with departures every 15–20 minutes; other routes on the lake are seasonal. There is no service on 25 December.
Can we combine Lake Iseo with Franciacorta or Bergamo?
Yes. The Franciacorta wine hills start at the southern end of the lake, so a winery visit fits easily on the way back; wineries need to be booked in advance. Bergamo’s upper town is also within reach, though with the island it makes a full day: ask us about extra hours.
Is a guide included?
No. Your driver is not a licensed tour guide and does not guide inside the sites, but with years of experience on these roads can recommend the best places, viewpoints and restaurants and give you practical tips. A licensed local guide can be booked on request.

Lake Iseo by private car or by train?

There is no direct train from Milan to the lake: you change in Brescia onto the regional line along the eastern shore, and with the connection the journey easily takes two hours each way. By car you go from your hotel door to the Sulzano ferry in about 1 hour 15 minutes, and you can add Iseo or a Franciacorta cellar that the train does not reach.

Why choose Lake Iseo and Monte Isola?

Lake Iseo is the lake Milanese families go to when they want to avoid the crowds. In 2016 it briefly made world news with Christo’s Floating Piers, which joined Sulzano to Monte Isola; today it is quiet again. The island has no visitors’ cars, a tradition of fishing and net-making, and simple trattorias by the water, and the Franciacorta vineyards are right next door.

How much is a Lake Iseo day trip?

MilanobyCar charges a fixed price per car: from €675 for two passengers in a Mercedes E-Class and from €760 for up to six in a V-Class, for 8 hours with the distance included, plus fuel, tolls and parking. Ferry tickets are extra and paid at the pier. The exact price for your date appears in the booking form.
