Lake Garda from Milan, without the coach
Sirmione sits at the end of a narrow peninsula reaching into the southern shore of Lake Garda, about 130 km from Milan: an hour and a half to an hour and three quarters on the A4. You enter the old town over the drawbridge of the Rocca Scaligera, a 13th-century castle surrounded by water, and at the far end of the peninsula are the Grotte di Catullo, the remains of a vast Roman villa above the lake.
A private car gives you the freedom that coach tours do not: you choose when to leave, how long to stay in Sirmione, and what to add in the afternoon, whether it is the harbour of Desenzano, a tasting of Lugana white wine or the Venetian fortress town of Peschiera. It is one of the most complete day trips from Milan. The price is per vehicle: from €765 with an E-Class, from €860 with a V-Class for up to six.

Lake Garda Day Trip Itinerary
Sirmione in the morning, lunch by the water and a second stop in the afternoon, back in Milan by early evening.
Tailor-made, always. This itinerary is our suggestion only: every MilanobyCar day trip is tailor-made. Change the stops, the order and the timing as you like, or tell us your own plan in the booking notes.
Your driver, your local insider. Our chauffeurs are not licensed tour guides and do not guide you inside museums or sites, but they know these places well from years on the road: ask them for the best viewpoints, where to eat, where to stroll and how to avoid the busiest spots. If you would like a licensed guide, we can book one for you.
Pick-up at your hotel in Milan
Your driver meets you at the hotel at the time you choose. Leaving around 9:00 gets you to Sirmione before the busiest hours.
Sirmione and the Rocca Scaligera
The old town is closed to traffic: we drop you by the castle and you walk in over the drawbridge. Climb the castle walls for the view, then wander the lanes to the lakefront.
Grotte di Catullo
At the tip of the peninsula, among olive trees, are the ruins of one of the largest Roman villas in northern Italy, with the lake on three sides. A small electric train runs up from the old town in season.
Lake fish and Lugana wine
Lunch on a terrace in Sirmione: lake fish, risotto, and a glass of Lugana, the white wine made from the vineyards just south of the lake. Your driver can suggest places and book a table.
Desenzano, a winery or Peschiera
Choose one: the old harbour and Roman villa mosaics of Desenzano, a Lugana tasting in a family winery, or the pentagonal Venetian fortress of Peschiera del Garda, a UNESCO site.
Back to your hotel in Milan
Door-to-door return, or drop-off in Verona or at another hotel if you are travelling on.

About 130 km east on the A4 motorway to the southern shore of the lake, an hour and a half to an hour and three quarters each way. Desenzano and Peschiera are 15 minutes from Sirmione.
Lake Garda Day Trip from Milan — FAQ
Lake Garda by private car or by train?
Trains from Milan stop at Desenzano and Peschiera in about an hour, but Sirmione has no station: you need a bus or a taxi, and coordinating a second stop is difficult. A private car takes you from your hotel to the castle gate and on to the next stop without waiting.
Sirmione or the northern lake?
For a day from Milan the southern shore is the natural choice: Sirmione, Desenzano and Peschiera are close together and an easy drive. The northern lake, with its mountains and fjord-like shores, is spectacular but further away, so it is better with a longer day.
How much is a Lake Garda day trip?
MilanobyCar charges a fixed price per car: from €765 for two passengers in a Mercedes E-Class and from €860 for up to six in a V-Class, including driver, fuel, tolls and parking. The exact price for your date appears in the booking form.
