Private Day Trip from Milan

A loop of Lake Como, with the car on the ferry

The centre of Lake Como is served by car ferries that shuttle between Menaggio, Cadenabbia, Bellagio and Varenna all day. That small fact changes the shape of a day out. Instead of going up one shore and back down the same road, you drive north along the western shore through Cernobbio and Tremezzo to Menaggio, roll onto the ferry with the car, step off in Bellagio and return to Milan along the other branch of the lake, by Lecco. It is the most complete of our Lake Como day trips from Milan.

Because the car crosses with you, there is no need to come back to the pier you left from, and anything you leave in the car stays with you. The ferry ticket for the car and passengers is paid on the day and is not included in the price. For the classic western-shore day, see our Bellagio day trip from Milan. The price is per vehicle, not per person: from €600 with an E-Class for two, from €680 with a V-Class for up to six.

Frequently Asked Questions

Lake Como Grand Tour with Car Ferry — FAQ

How long is the drive?
About 1 hour 40 minutes from Milan to Menaggio via Como and the western shore road, and about 1 hour 30 minutes from Bellagio back to Milan via Lecco. The whole loop is about 170 km.
How does the car ferry work and is it included?
Car ferries run between Menaggio, Cadenabbia, Bellagio and Varenna throughout the day; the crossing to Bellagio is short. Your driver drives on, you travel on deck. The ticket for the car and passengers is not included and is paid on the day.
How much does a private day trip from Milan to Lake Como with the car ferry cost?
From €600 per car with a Mercedes E-Class (up to 2 passengers) and from €680 with a V-Class (up to 6), for 8 hours with 150 km included. Saturdays and Sundays are +20%, major holidays +50%, and extra hours cost €75 (E-Class) or €85 (V-Class).
How is this different from the Bellagio day trip?
Here the car crosses the lake with you, so the day becomes a loop: western shore out, Lecco branch back, with no return to the pier you started from. It sees the most of the lake in one day, with more time in the car than the simpler options.
Can we visit Villa Carlotta or Villa del Balbianello as well?
Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo fits if you shorten lunch or add an hour. Villa del Balbianello needs a booked ticket and a walk or taxi boat from Lenno, so it works better on our dedicated villas day or with extra hours.
Is a guide included?
No. Your driver is not a licensed tour guide and does not guide you inside the sites, but after years on these roads he knows Lake Como well and can recommend the best viewpoints, places and restaurants, and give you practical tips for the day. A licensed local guide can be booked on request.

The Lake Como grand tour by private car or by public transport?

With trains, buses and ferries the same loop needs at least four connections and careful timing, and the buses on the western shore are often full in summer. With a private car and the car ferry the whole circuit flows: you choose the stops, the luggage stays in the car and the day ends at your hotel door.

What to know about the car ferry

The car ferries of Navigazione Laghi link only the central lake: Menaggio, Cadenabbia, Bellagio and Varenna. They are not bookable in advance and queues can form on summer weekends, which is why the timing is left to your driver, who adapts the plan to the day.

How much is a Lake Como grand tour?

MilanobyCar charges a fixed price per car: from €600 for two passengers in a Mercedes E-Class and from €680 for up to six in a V-Class, for 8 hours, including driver, fuel, tolls and parking. The car ferry ticket is extra. Weekends +20%, holidays +50%.
