Genoa from Milan: palaces, harbour and the sea

Genoa was one of the great maritime republics, and its wealth is still on show along Via Garibaldi, the 16th-century Strada Nuova, where the palaces of the Rolli system form a UNESCO World Heritage site. Below them spreads one of the largest medieval old towns in Europe, a maze of narrow lanes, the caruggi, running down to the Porto Antico. The city is about 145 km from Milan on the A7, around two hours each way, and among our day trips from Milan it is the one that brings you to the sea.

The car earns its keep at the end of the day: Boccadasse, a cove of colourful fishermen’s houses on the eastern edge of the city, is a short drive from the centre and the perfect place for a last focaccia or gelato. If you would like the Riviera as well, our Genoa and Portofino day trip adds Camogli and Portofino in 12 hours. The price is per vehicle, not per person: from €910 with an E-Class for two, from €1,025 with a V-Class for up to six.

Frequently Asked Questions

Genoa Day Trip from Milan — FAQ

How far is Genoa from Milan?
About 145 km. By car it takes around two hours on the A7 motorway, which crosses the Apennines in its last stretch. Your driver collects you at your hotel and drops you in the centre of Genoa.
Can the car take us into the old town?
The old town is a maze of narrow pedestrian lanes, so no car goes inside. Your driver drops you near Via Garibaldi or Piazza De Ferrari and meets you again at Porto Antico or wherever you finish.
How much does a private day trip from Milan to Genoa cost?
From €910 per car with a Mercedes E-Class (up to 2 passengers) and from €1,025 with a V-Class (up to 6), for 10 hours with distance included. Saturdays and Sundays are +20%, major holidays +50%, and extra hours cost €75 with the E-Class or €85 with the V-Class.
How is this different from the Genoa and Portofino day trip?
This 10-hour day is all about Genoa itself: the palaces, the old town, the harbour and Boccadasse. The 12-hour Genoa and Portofino tour spends less time in the city and continues along the Riviera to Camogli and Portofino.
Can we stop at the Serravalle Designer Outlet?
Yes. Serravalle Scrivia is right on the A7, so an hour or two of shopping on the way back is easy to add; ask us and we adjust the timing, with extra hours if needed.
Do we need to book the Aquarium?
Booking online is a good idea at weekends, on holidays and in summer, when queues can be long. Allow at least two hours for the visit.
Is a guide included?
No. Your driver is not a licensed tour guide and does not guide inside the sites, but with years of experience on these roads he can recommend the best places, viewpoints and restaurants and give you practical tips for the day. A licensed local guide for Genoa can be booked on request, for example for the palaces and the old town.

Genoa by private car or by train?

Trains from Milan Centrale to Genova Piazza Principe take around an hour and a half to two hours. The car is slower than the fastest train but goes door-to-door and, once in Genoa, saves the steep walks and taxis between the old town, the harbour and Boccadasse, which is several kilometres from the centre.

What to know before a Genoa day

Genoa is a vertical city: lanes are narrow, streets climb steeply and some of the best views are reached by lifts and funiculars. Wear comfortable shoes, keep an eye on your belongings in the busiest lanes, and save the seafront for the late afternoon, when the light on Boccadasse is at its best.

How much is a Genoa day trip?

MilanobyCar charges a fixed price per car: from €910 for two passengers in a Mercedes E-Class and from €1,025 for up to six in a V-Class, for 10 hours with distance included, including driver, fuel, tolls and parking. For Genoa with Camogli and Portofino, see the 12-hour Riviera day. The exact price for your date appears in the booking form.
