Gavi: Piedmont’s great white wine, an hour from Milan

Most of Piedmont’s famous wines are red. Gavi is the exception: a dry, fresh white made only from the Cortese grape in eleven communes around the village of Gavi, in the south-eastern corner of the region, and a DOCG since 1998. For centuries this was territory of the Republic of Genoa, and you can still feel it: the cooking leans towards Liguria, the sea is less than an hour away, and the village sits beneath a huge fortress rebuilt by the Genoese in the 17th century. At about 100 km from Milan, it is one of the easiest wine-focused day trips from Milan.

A typical day pairs two tastings with lunch in the village and a visit to the Forte di Gavi, or a stop at the Serravalle designer outlet on the way back. Winery visits and tastings must be booked in advance and are not included in the price; we help you arrange them. Gavi is a wine for lunch, and since your driver is the one who stays sober, you can enjoy a glass or two at the table, responsibly. The price is per vehicle, not per person: from €675 with an E-Class for two, from €765 with a V-Class for up to six.

Tailor-made, always. This itinerary is our suggestion only: every MilanobyCar day trip is tailor-made. Change the stops, the order and the timing as you like, or tell us your own plan in the booking notes.

Your driver, your local insider. Our chauffeurs are not licensed tour guides and do not guide you inside museums or sites, but they know these places well from years on the road: ask them for the best viewpoints, where to eat, where to stroll and how to avoid the busiest spots. If you would like a licensed guide, we can book one for you.

Your driver meets you in the lobby and takes the A7 Milan–Genoa motorway south, across the Po and past Tortona, to the Serravalle Scrivia exit.

Depart around 9:00Included in package
First cellar

Cortese in the Gavi hills

A family estate among the vineyards shows you the cellar and pours its Gavi, often including a Gavi del Comune di Gavi, from vines inside the village’s own boundaries, and an older vintage that shows how well Cortese can age.

Fortress

The Forte di Gavi

The fortress above the village grew from a medieval castle into a great Genoese stronghold in the 17th century, and later served as a prison. It is a state museum with variable opening days, so we check the calendar for your date and book if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Gavi Wine Tour from Milan — FAQ

How far is Gavi from Milan?
About 100 km. The drive on the A7 takes around 1 hour 15 minutes each way, so an 8-hour day leaves more than five hours for the cellars, lunch and the village.
How much does a private Gavi wine tour from Milan cost?
From €675 per car with a Mercedes E-Class (up to 2 passengers) and from €765 with a V-Class (up to 6), for 8 hours with the distance included. Weekends are +20%, major holidays +50%, extra hours €75 (E) or €85 (V).
Are the tastings included?
No. Winery visits and tastings are booked in advance and paid directly to the producers. Most estates receive visitors by appointment only, so tell us your date and we can help you book.
Is a guide included?
No. Your driver speaks English and is not a licensed tour guide, so he does not guide inside the wineries or the fortress. With years of experience on these roads, though, he can recommend producers, restaurants and the best views over the Gavi hills, and give you practical tips along the way. A licensed local guide can be booked on request.
Is the Forte di Gavi open every day?
No. It is run by the Italian Ministry of Culture with opening days that vary through the year, and it is closed on Mondays. We check the calendar for your date; if it is closed, the village and a second winery fill the time easily.
Can we continue to Genoa or the coast?
Yes. Gavi is about 50 minutes from Genoa, so the day can end in Genoa, at Genoa airport or at a hotel on the Riviera instead of Milan. Tell us in the booking notes and we confirm the price.

Gavi by private car or by train?

There is no railway to Gavi: from Milan you need a train to Novi Ligure or Arquata Scrivia and then a bus, which takes well over two hours each way. The wineries are outside the village. A private car takes about an hour and fifteen minutes and goes from cellar to cellar.

Why choose Gavi for a wine day

Gavi is close to Milan, uncrowded and different: a white-wine region in a red-wine part of Italy, with a Genoese history and Ligurian touches at the table. It suits travellers who prefer white wine, combine wine with shopping at Serravalle, or want a shorter drive than to Barolo.

How much is a Gavi day trip?

MilanobyCar charges a fixed price per car: from €675 for two passengers in a Mercedes E-Class and from €765 for up to six in a V-Class, for an 8-hour day including driver, fuel, tolls and parking. The exact price for your date appears in the booking form.
