Franciacorta from Milan: sparkling wine country

Franciacorta is a small area of rolling hills, vineyards and old villages between the city of Brescia and the southern shore of Lake Iseo. It gives its name to one of Italy’s finest sparkling wines, made by the traditional method, with the second fermentation in the bottle, mainly from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. In 1995 it became the first Italian traditional-method sparkling wine to receive DOCG status, and even the non-vintage wines must rest at least 18 months on the lees before release. At about 70 km from Milan, it is the easiest wine region for day trips from Milan.

Most wineries receive visitors by appointment only, so the visits are booked before the day: usually two cellars, each with a tour and a tasting, with lunch in between. Tell us the estates you would like to see, or ask for suggestions, and we plan the route around them. With a private car nobody has to drive after the tastings, and Lake Iseo is only a few minutes away for a walk by the water at the end. The price is per vehicle, not per person: from €600 with an E-Class for two, from €680 with a V-Class for up to six.

Frequently Asked Questions

Franciacorta Wine Tour from Milan — FAQ

How far is Franciacorta from Milan?
About 70 km to the heart of the wine area, around 1 hour on the A4 motorway towards Brescia, a little more at rush hour. The wineries are spread over the hills, a few minutes’ drive from one another.
How much does a private day trip from Milan to Franciacorta cost?
From €600 per car with a Mercedes E-Class (up to 2 passengers) and from €680 with a V-Class (up to 6), for 8 hours with 150 km included. Weekends are +20%, major holidays +50%, extra hours €75 (E-Class) or €85 (V-Class). Winery visits and tastings are paid to the wineries.
Do we need to book the wineries in advance?
Yes. Most Franciacorta wineries welcome visitors by appointment only, and the popular ones fill up in spring and autumn. Tell us your preferred wineries or the style you like when you book, and allow some days for the visits to be confirmed.
How many wineries can we visit in one day?
Two is ideal in 8 hours, with a relaxed lunch in between; three is possible with shorter visits. Each visit, with a cellar tour and a tasting, usually takes one and a half to two hours.
Can we combine Franciacorta with Lake Iseo, Bergamo or Brescia?
Yes. Lake Iseo is next door, and the boat to Monte Isola fits with one winery instead of two. Brescia is about 20 minutes away and Bergamo about 40. Write it in the booking notes and we confirm the plan and the price.
Is a guide included?
No. Your driver is not a licensed tour guide and does not guide inside the sites, but with years of experience on these roads can recommend the best places, viewpoints and restaurants and give you practical tips. A licensed local guide can be booked on request.

Franciacorta by private car or by train?

The regional line from Brescia to Iseo crosses Franciacorta, but the wineries are scattered over the hills, far from the stations, and taxis are scarce. A wine day also means someone should not be driving. A private car takes you from your Milan hotel to the cellar doors and back, and everyone can taste.

What to know before a Franciacorta wine tour

Franciacorta is made in several styles: Brut and Extra Brut, Rosé, and Satèn, a softer, creamier blanc de blancs from white grapes only, bottled at lower pressure. Vintage wines (Millesimato) and Riserva spend longer on the lees. Book the visits early, eat a good lunch, and think ahead about bringing bottles home: ask the wineries about shipping.

How much is a Franciacorta wine tour?

MilanobyCar charges a fixed price per car: from €600 for two passengers in a Mercedes E-Class and from €680 for up to six in a V-Class, for 8 hours with 150 km included, plus fuel, tolls and parking. Tastings are paid to the wineries. The exact price for your date appears in the booking form.
