The Riviera di Ponente from Milan: medieval towns by the sea
West of Genoa the Riviera changes character. Instead of yachts and boutiques there are long beaches, olive terraces and small towns that have kept their walls and towers. Finale Ligure is really three places: Finalmarina on the seafront, Finalpia, and Finalborgo, a walled medieval village a kilometre inland, counted among the Borghi più belli d’Italia. The area is also well known for rock climbing and mountain biking on the limestone hills behind. It is about 195 km from Milan, roughly two hours to two and a quarter on the motorway, an easy and less obvious choice among our day trips from Milan.
A few kilometres east along the coast road are Varigotti, a former fishing village of pastel houses built right on the beach, and Noli, which was an independent maritime republic from 1192 until 1797 and still has its medieval towers, walls and the Romanesque church of San Paragorio. All three are linked by the old Via Aurelia, which is exactly where a private car beats the train: you stop wherever the view or the beach looks right. The price is per vehicle, not per person: from €1,060 with an E-Class for two, from €1,190 with a V-Class for up to six.

Finale Ligure Day Trip Itinerary
A 10-hour day on the western Riviera: a walled village in the morning, the beach at lunchtime, a medieval republic in the afternoon.
Tailor-made, always. This itinerary is our suggestion only: every MilanobyCar day trip is tailor-made. Change the stops, the order and the timing as you like, or tell us your own plan in the booking notes.
Your driver, your local insider. Our chauffeurs are not licensed tour guides and do not guide you inside museums or sites, but they know these places well from years on the road: ask them for the best viewpoints, where to eat, where to stroll and how to avoid the busiest spots. If you would like a licensed guide, we can book one for you.
Pick-up at your hotel in Milan
Your driver meets you in the lobby. The route crosses the Po plain and the Apennines and reaches the sea at Voltri, then follows the A10 west along the coast to the Finale Ligure exit.
The walled village
Enter through one of the old gates into a compact grid of lanes, small squares and arcades. The Baroque Basilica of San Biagio, the cloisters of Santa Caterina with the archaeological museum, and above the village the Spanish-built Forte San Giovanni and the ruins of Castel Gavone.
A walk on the seafront
A short drive down to the long promenade of Finalmarina, with its beach clubs and the triumphal arch put up in 1666 for the Spanish Infanta Margaret Theresa, who passed through Finale on her way to Vienna to marry Emperor Leopold I.
Lunch on the beach
Five minutes along the Aurelia, Varigotti’s pastel houses stand right on the sand. Have lunch by the water, and in summer swim at the beach or in the clear water of the Baia dei Saraceni.
Towers, walls and San Paragorio
The old centre of Noli is ringed by walls climbing up to the castle of Monte Ursino. Look for the medieval towers in the lanes and the 11th-century Romanesque church of San Paragorio just outside the centre. Dante mentions Noli in the Divine Comedy.
Back to your hotel in Milan
About two hours back to Milan, door to door, or drop-off at Malpensa, Linate or a hotel elsewhere.

Milan to Finale Ligure: The Route
About 195 km: the A7 south from Milan, the link to the A26 across the Apennines to Voltri, then the A10 west along the Riviera to the Finale Ligure exit. Around two hours to two and a quarter; Varigotti and Noli are a few minutes east on the coast road.
Finale Ligure Day Trip from Milan — FAQ
Finale Ligure by private car or by train?
Finale Ligure has a station on the Genoa – Ventimiglia line, but Finalborgo is inland from it and Varigotti and Noli are best reached by road. Combining the three by public transport takes most of the day. A private car takes you from village to village along the Aurelia in minutes.
Why choose the Riviera di Ponente?
The western Riviera is less famous than Portofino and the Cinque Terre, and that is its appeal: wider beaches, fewer crowds and towns that still look much as they did centuries ago. It suits travellers who have already seen the Levante or who simply want a calmer day by the sea.
How much is a Finale Ligure day trip?
MilanobyCar charges a fixed price per car: from €1,060 for two passengers in a Mercedes E-Class and from €1,190 for up to six in a V-Class, for 10 hours with driver, fuel, tolls and parking included. The exact price for your date appears in the booking form.
