Crespi d’Adda and Bergamo: a model village and a walled city
Crespi d’Adda is a village built from nothing by a family of cotton manufacturers. In 1878 Cristoforo Benigno Crespi opened a cotton mill on the river Adda, and around it the family built a whole town for the workers: houses with gardens on a regular grid, a school, a wash-house, a clinic, a church copied from the Renaissance sanctuary of Santa Maria di Piazza in Busto Arsizio, their home town, a castle-like villa for the owners and a cemetery with the family mausoleum. The mill closed in 2003, but the village is still lived in and has survived almost intact; UNESCO listed it in 1995 as an outstanding example of the company towns of Europe and North America. It is only about 35 km from Milan, which leaves time for Bergamo in the same day, one of the more unusual day trips from Milan.
In the morning you walk the village at your own pace, or with a licensed guide (walking tours run on Sundays and on request). Then your driver takes you about 30 minutes on to Bergamo for lunch and the afternoon in the Città Alta, the old upper town inside its Venetian walls, before the drive back to Milan. The price is per vehicle, not per person: from €600 with an E-Class for two, from €680 with a V-Class for up to six.

Crespi d’Adda and Bergamo Itinerary
An 8-hour day: the company town in the morning, Bergamo’s upper town in the afternoon.
Tailor-made, always. This itinerary is our suggestion only: every MilanobyCar day trip is tailor-made. Change the stops, the order and the timing as you like, or tell us your own plan in the booking notes.
Your driver, your local insider. Our chauffeurs are not licensed tour guides and do not guide you inside museums or sites, but they know these places well from years on the road: ask them for the best viewpoints, where to eat, where to stroll and how to avoid the busiest spots. If you would like a licensed guide, we can book one for you.
Pick-up at your hotel in Milan
Your driver meets you in the lobby at the time you choose. The day can also start from Malpensa or Linate arrivals, with your luggage kept safely in the car.
Crespi d’Adda: the mill and the workers’ houses
Arrival at the church square. The long brick mill stretches beside the river with its tall chimney; across the road, the workers’ houses stand in neat rows, each with its own garden. The village is free to walk.
Church, villa and cemetery
The church, a near-copy of the sanctuary in Busto Arsizio, the owners’ villa built like a medieval castle, and at the far end of the main avenue the cemetery with the monumental Crespi mausoleum. Walk down to the river and its footbridge too. Please respect the residents: many of the houses are still homes.
Drive to the Città Alta
About 30 minutes by car. Most of the upper town is closed to traffic, so your driver drops you at the funicular or at one of the gates in the Venetian walls, which are a UNESCO World Heritage site of their own.
Lunch in the upper town
Bergamo specialities such as casoncelli, polenta and Taleggio cheese are on most menus in the Città Alta. Your driver can suggest a place and book a table.
Piazza Vecchia and the Colleoni Chapel
The old square with its fountain and bell tower, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and the marble Colleoni Chapel beside it, then a walk along the walls before your driver collects you.
Back to your hotel in Milan
Door-to-door return, or drop-off at Bergamo airport, about 15 minutes from the upper town, Linate or Malpensa.

Crespi d’Adda Day Trip from Milan — FAQ
Crespi d’Adda by private car or by train?
There is no railway station in Crespi d’Adda, and reaching it from Milan by public transport means a train and a bus, with a long walk or a taxi at the end. Combining it with Bergamo on the same day makes the connections even harder. By car, Crespi is 40 minutes from your hotel and Bergamo 30 minutes after that.
What makes Crespi d’Adda worth a visit?
It is a rare chance to see how an industrial family of the late 19th century imagined the ideal life of its workers, with every building from cradle to grave planned by the company. The village is quiet, green and unspoilt, and it makes a striking contrast with the medieval and Venetian streets of Bergamo in the afternoon.
How much is a Crespi d’Adda and Bergamo day trip?
MilanobyCar charges a fixed price per car: from €600 for two passengers in a Mercedes E-Class and from €680 for up to six in a V-Class, for 8 hours with 150 km included, plus fuel, tolls and parking. The exact price for your date appears in the booking form.
