Cremona from Milan: violins, the Torrazzo and torrone

Cremona is where Andrea Amati, Antonio Stradivari and the Guarneri family made the instruments that still set the standard for the violin. The craft never left: violin makers still work by hand in workshops across the city, and UNESCO lists traditional violin craftsmanship in Cremona as intangible cultural heritage. The city is about 90 km from Milan, an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half by car, a quiet and rewarding choice among our day trips from Milan.

The Museo del Violino traces five centuries of violin making with instruments by Stradivari, Amati and Guarneri, and on many days at noon one of them is played in the museum’s auditorium. A few minutes away is Piazza del Comune, with the cathedral, the octagonal baptistery and the Torrazzo, 112 metres tall with 502 steps to the top. The price is per vehicle, not per person: from €660 with an E-Class for two, from €750 with a V-Class for up to six.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cremona Day Trip from Milan — FAQ

How far is Cremona from Milan?
About 90 km. By car it takes 1 hour 15 to 30 minutes, either by motorway via Piacenza or on the direct Paullese road through Crema.
Can we hear a Stradivari played?
Often, yes. The Museo del Violino holds short auditions on its historic instruments in the Auditorium Giovanni Arvedi, usually at noon on Saturdays and Sundays and on more days in some months. Check the museum’s calendar and book before your trip; we plan the day around it.
How much does a private day trip from Milan to Cremona cost?
From €660 per car with a Mercedes E-Class (up to 2 passengers) and from €750 with a V-Class (up to 6), for 8 hours with distance included. Saturdays and Sundays are +20%, major holidays +50%, and extra hours cost €75 with the E-Class or €85 with the V-Class.
Can we combine Cremona with another place?
Yes. Lodi, Crema or the walled town of Pizzighettone fit on the way. Mantua and Sabbioneta are further east and better as a separate day, or as a longer day with extra hours.
Can the car drive into central Cremona?
The centre has a limited-traffic zone and the main squares are pedestrian. Your driver drops you a short walk from Piazza del Comune and collects you at an agreed point.
Is a guide included?
No. Your driver is not a licensed tour guide and does not guide inside the sites, but with years of experience on these roads he can recommend the best places, viewpoints and restaurants and give you practical tips for the day. A licensed local guide for Cremona can be booked on request.

Cremona by private car or by train?

Trains from Milan to Cremona are regional services that take about an hour or more, with no high-speed option. A private car takes a similar time door-to-door, avoids the station transfers, and lets you add Pizzighettone, Lodi or Crema on the same day.

Why Cremona is worth a day from Milan

For music lovers there is nowhere quite like it: the sound of a Stradivari in the room where the museum keeps it, and workshops where violins are still made with the same methods. For everyone else, Cremona is an elegant, quiet city with a superb cathedral square, few crowds and very good food.

How much is a Cremona day trip?

MilanobyCar charges a fixed price per car: from €660 for two passengers in a Mercedes E-Class and from €750 for up to six in a V-Class, for 8 hours with distance included, including driver, fuel, tolls and parking. Distance is included in the price. The exact price for your date appears in the booking form.
