Private Day Trip from Milan

Como itself, not just the gateway to the lake

Most people pass through Como on the way to somewhere else on the lake. Spend the day in the city instead and you find a compact Roman grid inside medieval walls, a cathedral that took more than three centuries to finish, the Romanesque basilica of Sant’Abbondio, and a lakefront that leads past the Tempio Voltiano, the museum dedicated to Alessandro Volta, to the gardens of Villa Olmo. Above it all, a funicular climbs to Brunate. At about 50 km it is the closest of the lake day trips from Milan, and the least time in the car.

Como also made its fortune on silk, and the city is still a centre for silk design and weaving, a theme you can follow in its museum and shops. With the car the day stays flexible: Cernobbio is ten minutes along the shore, and the Swiss border is close if you want to add Lugano. The price is per vehicle, not per person: from €600 with an E-Class for two, from €680 with a V-Class for up to six.

Como Day Trip Itinerary

A city day by the lake with little driving: old town, funicular, lunch and the lakeside promenade.

Tailor-made, always. This itinerary is our suggestion only: every MilanobyCar day trip is tailor-made. Change the stops, the order and the timing as you like, or tell us your own plan in the booking notes.

Your driver, your local insider. Our chauffeurs are not licensed tour guides and do not guide you inside museums or sites, but they know these places well from years on the road: ask them for the best viewpoints, where to eat, where to stroll and how to avoid the busiest spots. If you would like a licensed guide, we can book one for you.

Departure

Pick-up at your hotel in Milan

Your driver meets you in the lobby; the A9 brings you to Como in under an hour. From Malpensa the day can start straight from arrivals, luggage in the car.

Depart around 9:00Included in package
Old town

The Duomo, the Broletto and the walled town

The walled centre is a limited-traffic zone, so you are dropped on the lakefront by Piazza Cavour. The marble Duomo, built between the late 14th and 18th centuries, stands beside the striped Broletto, the medieval town hall; from there the lanes lead to San Fedele and the stretch of walls at Porta Torre.

Around 9:50–11:00Free to walk
Brunate

The funicular to the “balcony of the Alps”

The funicular has run since 1894 and takes about 7 minutes from the lakefront to Brunate, at 715 m, with a wide view of the city, the lake and, on clear days, the Alps. A walk of about half an hour leads up to the Faro Voltiano, a lighthouse built in 1927 for the centenary of Volta’s death.

11:00–12:30Funicular ticket not included
Lunch

Lunch in the walled town

Risotto with lake perch, missoltini (dried shad) and polenta are the local dishes. Your driver can suggest places in the old town or on the lake and book a table.

Around 12:45–14:00Meal not included
Lakefront

Tempio Voltiano and Villa Olmo

Walk along the shore to the neoclassical Tempio Voltiano, with Volta’s instruments and the voltaic pile (closed on Mondays), then continue on the lakeside promenade to the park of Villa Olmo.

14:00–15:30Museum ticket not included
Afternoon

Sant’Abbondio, silk or Cernobbio

Finish with the Romanesque basilica of Sant’Abbondio, the silk museum or a silk shop, or let the driver take you ten minutes along the shore to Cernobbio. A short public boat ride on the first basin of the lake is another option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Como Day Trip from Milan — FAQ

How far is Como from Milan?
About 50 km, 45 minutes to an hour on the A8 and A9 motorways depending on traffic. It is the closest point of Lake Como to Milan.
How much does a private day trip from Milan to Como cost?
From €600 per car with a Mercedes E-Class (up to 2 passengers) and from €680 with a V-Class (up to 6), for 8 hours with 150 km included. Saturdays and Sundays are +20%, major holidays +50%, and extra hours cost €75 (E-Class) or €85 (V-Class).
Can the car drive into the old town?
The walled centre of Como is a limited-traffic zone. Your driver drops you on the lakefront by Piazza Cavour, a few minutes’ walk from the Duomo, and picks you up there or wherever you prefer to finish.
Is a full day in Como enough, or too much?
Como fills a relaxed day: old town, funicular, lunch and the lakefront. If you want more lake, Cernobbio is ten minutes away, and Bellagio or Lugano can be added with extra hours. We confirm the plan and price before you pay.
Do we need to book tickets?
Not usually. The funicular and the Tempio Voltiano sell tickets on site. The Duomo is an active cathedral, so visits pause during services. Check museum opening days, as several close on Mondays.
Is a guide included?
No. Your driver is not a licensed tour guide and does not guide you inside the sites, but after years on these roads he knows Como well and can recommend the best viewpoints, places and restaurants, and give you practical tips for the day. A licensed local guide can be booked on request.

Como by private car or by train?

Trains from Milan reach Como in under an hour and are a fair choice for the city alone. A private car adds a door-to-door day with no station transfers, and lets you combine Como with Cernobbio, a lakeside villa or the Swiss side of the border without planning connections.

Why spend a day in Como city?

Como has the lake on its doorstep and real substance behind it: Roman origins, a fine cathedral, Romanesque churches, Volta’s museum and centuries of silk making. It is also the easiest lake day from Milan, with the least time on the road.

How much is a Como day trip?

MilanobyCar charges a fixed price per car: from €600 for two passengers in a Mercedes E-Class and from €680 for up to six in a V-Class, for 8 hours with 150 km included, driver, fuel, tolls and parking. Weekends +20%, holidays +50%, extra hours €75 or €85.
