Camogli from Milan: the quieter side of the Portofino headland

Camogli sits on the western side of the Portofino promontory, about 20 km east of Genoa. In the 19th century it was known as the town of a thousand white sailing ships, and it still feels like a working seafaring town rather than a resort: tall houses painted in ochre and red line the pebble beach, the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta stands on the rocks at the harbour mouth, and the Castello della Dragonara guards the point. It is about 160 km from Milan, roughly two hours on the A7 and A12, and one of the most relaxed day trips from Milan to the sea.

The other half of the day is San Fruttuoso, a medieval abbey in a small cove on the far side of the headland. There is no road: you get there by boat from Camogli, or on foot along the trails of the Portofino park. The abbey has belonged to FAI, the Italian National Trust, since 1983, and the bronze Christ of the Abyss has stood on the seabed of the bay since 1954. The price is per vehicle, not per person: from €960 with an E-Class for two, from €1,080 with a V-Class for up to six.

Frequently Asked Questions

Camogli Day Trip from Milan — FAQ

How far is Camogli from Milan?
About 160 km. By car it takes around two hours on the A7 and A12 motorways, a little more on summer weekends. Your driver drops you on the seafront and collects you at the same spot.
Can we drive to San Fruttuoso?
No. There is no road to San Fruttuoso: it is reached only by boat or on foot. The boat from Camogli is the easy way. The trails across the Portofino park are beautiful but take a couple of hours or more, with steep and rocky stretches.
How much does a private day trip from Milan to Camogli cost?
From €960 per car with a Mercedes E-Class (up to 2 passengers) and from €1,080 with a V-Class (up to 6), for 10 hours with distance included. Weekends are +20%, major holidays +50%, extra hours €75 (E) or €85 (V).
What if the sea is too rough for the boat?
Boats to San Fruttuoso do not sail in bad sea conditions, and the timetable is reduced outside the main season. If the boat is cancelled, your driver can take you on to Santa Margherita and Portofino instead, so the day is not lost.
Can we combine Camogli with Portofino?
Yes. Portofino and Santa Margherita are about half an hour away by road. A day with Camogli in the morning and Portofino in the afternoon works well; it means less time at San Fruttuoso, so tell us your priorities in the booking notes.
Is a guide included?
No. Your driver is not a licensed tour guide and does not come inside the abbey, but with years of experience on this coast can recommend the best viewpoints, the right boat times and restaurants worth booking. A licensed local guide can be arranged on request.
When is the best time to visit Camogli?
From April to October, when the boats run most often. The town is busiest on summer weekends and on the second Sunday of May, when the Sagra del Pesce fries fish for everyone in a giant pan on the seafront.

Camogli by private car or by train?

Camogli has a station on the coastal line, but from Milan the trip is longer than by car, often with a change in Genoa, and the station sits above the town. With a private car you go straight from your hotel to the seafront in about two hours, and you can add Recco, Santa Margherita or Portofino on the way back without checking a timetable.

Why choose Camogli over Portofino?

Camogli is a real town where people live and fish all year, with a long beach and plenty of space on the promenade. It is less polished than Portofino and less crowded, and it is the natural starting point for San Fruttuoso, one of the most unusual places on the Italian coast.

How much is a Camogli day trip?

MilanobyCar charges a fixed price per car: from €960 for two passengers in a Mercedes E-Class and from €1,080 for up to six in a V-Class, for 10 hours with driver, fuel, tolls and parking included. Boat and abbey tickets are extra. The exact price for your date appears in the booking form.
