Private Day Trip from Milan

The Bernina line from Milan, without the connections

The Bernina railway climbs from Tirano, in Italian Valtellina, over the Bernina Pass and down into the Engadine to St. Moritz, without a rack: just curves, tunnels and viaducts, including the spiral viaduct at Brusio, where the train turns a full circle to gain height. At Ospizio Bernina it reaches 2,253 m, beside the glaciers of the Bernina group and Lago Bianco. Together with the Albula line it has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2008, and it is the most memorable of all day trips from Milan for anyone who loves trains.

Doing it by public transport from Milan means a regional train to Tirano and a long way back. With a private car the logistics disappear: your driver takes you to Tirano station, then drives over the Bernina Pass to meet you at St. Moritz, and brings you home through the Bregaglia and along Lake Como. The price is per vehicle, not per person: from €1,155 with an E-Class for two, from €1,305 with a V-Class for up to six. Train tickets are separate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bernina Express Day Trip from Milan — FAQ

How far is Tirano from Milan, and how long is the train?
Tirano is about 165 km from Milan, roughly three hours by car along Lake Como and Valtellina. The train from Tirano to St. Moritz takes around two and a half hours, and the drive from St. Moritz back to Milan is about three hours.
How much does the Bernina Express day trip cost?
From €1,155 per car with a Mercedes E-Class (up to 2 passengers) and from €1,305 with a V-Class (up to 6), for 12 hours with distance included. Weekends are +20%, major holidays +50%, extra hours €75 or €85. Train tickets are not included.
Do we need to book the train in advance?
Yes, as early as you can. The Bernina Express panoramic train needs a seat reservation on top of the ticket, and summer trains fill up. Book directly with the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) and send us the train time: we build the day around it. Regular regional trains run on the same line and do not need a reservation, but they have standard carriages.
Do we need a passport?
Yes. The train crosses into Switzerland a few minutes after leaving Tirano, and St. Moritz is in Switzerland, so every passenger needs a passport or an ID card valid for travel.
Does the train run in winter?
Yes, the Bernina line runs all year, and many people find it most beautiful in snow. In winter your driver allows extra time for the Bernina and Maloja roads, which can be affected by snowfall.
Is a guide included?
No. Your driver is not a licensed tour guide and does not come on the train or guide inside the sites, but after years on these roads can recommend the best viewpoints, places and restaurants and give practical tips. A licensed local guide can be booked on request.

Bernina Express by private car or by train from Milan?

From Milan you can reach Tirano by regional train in about two and a half hours, but then you are committed to coming back the same way or adding long connections from St. Moritz. With a private car you leave from your hotel, ride the most spectacular part of the line, and are driven home by a different route, without retracing your steps.

What to know about the Bernina line

The panoramic Bernina Express carriages have large windows that curve up into the roof; the regional trains on the same line are simpler but cheaper and need no seat reservation. Either way, the section between Poschiavo and Ospizio Bernina is the highlight. Bring a passport or ID card and a warm layer: at the pass it can be cold even in July.

How much is a Bernina Express day trip?

MilanobyCar charges a fixed price per car: from €1,155 for two passengers in a Mercedes E-Class and from €1,305 for up to six in a V-Class, for 12 hours including driver, fuel, tolls and parking. Train tickets are bought separately from the Rhaetian Railway. The exact car price for your date appears in the booking form.
