Bergamo from Milan, at your own pace
Bergamo is two towns in one. Down on the plain is the modern Città Bassa; up on the hill, behind 16th-century Venetian walls, is the Città Alta, the old upper town of cobbled streets, palaces and bell towers. It is about 55 km from Milan, 50 minutes to an hour on the A4 motorway, which makes it one of the easiest and most rewarding day trips from Milan.
With a private car you skip the train and the bus up the hill: your driver drops you at the walls or the funicular and collects you there, and the day has room for a second stop. Crespi d’Adda, the UNESCO workers’ village, is 20 minutes away; the Franciacorta wineries and Lake Iseo are about 40. The price is per vehicle, not per person: from €600 with an E-Class for two, from €680 with a V-Class for up to six.

Bergamo Day Trip Itinerary
An unhurried 8-hour day with time for lunch and a second stop on the way back.
Tailor-made, always. This itinerary is our suggestion only: every MilanobyCar day trip is tailor-made. Change the stops, the order and the timing as you like, or tell us your own plan in the booking notes.
Your driver, your local insider. Our chauffeurs are not licensed tour guides and do not guide you inside museums or sites, but they know these places well from years on the road: ask them for the best viewpoints, where to eat, where to stroll and how to avoid the busiest spots. If you would like a licensed guide, we can book one for you.
Pick-up at your hotel in Milan
Your driver meets you in the lobby at the time you choose. From Malpensa, Linate or Bergamo airport the day can start straight from arrivals, with your luggage kept safely in the car.
The funicular and the Venetian walls
Most of the Città Alta is a limited-traffic zone, so we drop you at the funicular from the lower town or at Porta San Giacomo, one of the monumental gates in the walls. The walls are part of a UNESCO World Heritage site and the views over the plain are wide.
Piazza Vecchia, Santa Maria Maggiore and the Colleoni Chapel
The old square with Palazzo della Ragione and the Campanone bell tower, then the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and the marble Colleoni Chapel next door. Take your time: this is the core of the day.
Casoncelli and polenta in the upper town
Bergamo cooking is generous: casoncelli (stuffed pasta with butter and sage), polenta and local cheeses such as Taleggio. Stracciatella ice cream was invented here too, in 1961. Your driver can suggest places and book a table.
San Vigilio, or a stop on the way back
Ride the second funicular up to San Vigilio for the view, or visit the Accademia Carrara art gallery. Alternatively, leave Bergamo early for Crespi d’Adda or a Franciacorta winery on the way back to Milan.
Back to your hotel in Milan
Door-to-door return, or drop-off at another place: Malpensa, Linate, Lake Como or a hotel elsewhere.

Bergamo Day Trip from Milan — FAQ
Bergamo by private car or by train?
The train from Milan Centrale or Garibaldi takes about 50 minutes to Bergamo station, then you need the bus and the funicular to reach the upper town, and the same in reverse. With a private car the day starts at your hotel door, you save the connections, and you can add a second stop that the train cannot reach, such as Crespi d’Adda or Franciacorta.
What makes Bergamo worth a day from Milan?
The Città Alta has kept its shape for centuries: a compact hilltop town enclosed by walls built by the Republic of Venice, with Piazza Vecchia at its centre. It is calm, walkable and full of character, and it is close enough to Milan to enjoy without an early start.
How much is a Bergamo day trip?
MilanobyCar charges a fixed price per car: from €600 for two passengers in a Mercedes E-Class and from €680 for up to six in a V-Class, including driver, fuel, tolls and parking. The exact price for your date appears in the booking form.
