The Monferrato: Barbera country, above and below ground

The Monferrato is the gentler, less visited half of Piedmont’s wine country: rolling hills between the Po and the Langhe, dotted with villages on every crest. It is Barbera country, and around Canelli the home of Moscato, the grape behind Moscato d’Asti and Asti Spumante. Two of its sights are underground and part of the UNESCO site “Vineyard Landscape of Piedmont: Langhe-Roero and Monferrato”: the infernot, small chambers hand-dug into the soft local sandstone to keep wine, and the “underground cathedrals” of Canelli, long vaulted cellars where sparkling wine ages. Asti is about 125 km from Milan, which makes this a full but very varied one among our day trips from Milan.

We usually go out through the northern Monferrato around Casale and come back from the south, so the day covers an infernot village, the medieval towers of Asti, lunch and a Canelli cellar without doubling back. Winery and cellar visits must be booked in advance and are not included in the price; we can help you book. With a chauffeur at the wheel, everyone can taste, and we only ask that you enjoy it responsibly. The price is per vehicle, not per person: from €900 with an E-Class for two, from €1,015 with a V-Class for up to six.

Frequently Asked Questions

Asti & Monferrato Wine Tour from Milan — FAQ

How far is Asti from Milan?
About 125 km, roughly 1 hour 30 minutes by motorway. The full loop through Casale, Asti and Canelli is around 280 km, which is why this is a 10-hour day.
How much does a private Asti and Monferrato wine tour cost?
From €900 per car with a Mercedes E-Class (up to 2 passengers) and from €1,015 with a V-Class (up to 6), for 10 hours with the distance included. Weekends are +20%, major holidays +50%, extra hours €75 (E) or €85 (V).
What is an infernot?
A small underground room dug by hand into the soft sandstone of the Casale Monferrato hills, traditionally used to keep the family’s best bottles cool and dark. Most are in private homes; some can be visited at wineries and at the Cella Monte ecomuseum by reservation.
Do we need to book the cellars?
Yes. The Canelli underground cellars and the Monferrato wineries are visited by reservation only and the tastings are paid directly to them. Tell us your date and we can help you book; weekday visits are often easier to arrange.
Is a guide included?
No. Your driver speaks English and is not a licensed tour guide, so he does not guide inside the cellars, the infernot or the monuments of Asti. With years of experience on these roads, though, he can recommend villages, wineries and trattorie in the Monferrato, and give you practical tips along the way. A licensed local guide can be booked on request.
Can we add the Langhe or Alba?
Alba is about 30 km from Asti, so it can replace one of the stops, or be added with extra hours. For Barolo and the Langhe we recommend a dedicated day.

Asti and the Monferrato by private car or by train?

Trains from Milan reach Asti, but the infernot villages and the Canelli cellars are scattered across the hills with very limited connections. A private car turns the day into a single loop, with no waiting at small stations and nobody driving after the tastings.

Barbera, Moscato and the wines to know

Barbera d’Asti DOCG is the everyday red of the area and Nizza DOCG its 100% Barbera top tier from around Nizza Monferrato. Moscato d’Asti is lightly sparkling, sweet and low in alcohol; Asti Spumante is its fully sparkling cousin. Ruchè from Castagnole Monferrato is a rare, aromatic red worth asking for.

How much is an Asti and Monferrato day trip?

MilanobyCar charges a fixed price per car: from €900 for two passengers in a Mercedes E-Class and from €1,015 for up to six in a V-Class, for a 10-hour day including driver, fuel, tolls and parking. The exact price for your date appears in the booking form.
