Alba: truffles in autumn, good reasons all year
Alba is a handsome brick town on the Tanaro river with medieval towers, a Gothic cathedral and some of the best food shops in Piedmont. It is best known for the white truffle, Tuber magnatum, which grows wild in the woods of the Langhe, Roero and Monferrato and is gathered wild, not farmed. The season runs through the autumn, and every year the town holds the International White Truffle Fair of Alba, with its truffle market open at weekends; dates change each year, so we check them for your trip. Alba is about 155 km from Milan, roughly 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours by motorway, which makes it one of the longer day trips from Milan in our 8-hour range.
Outside the truffle season Alba is still well worth the drive: the old town, the wines of Barbaresco and Barolo a few kilometres away, and Langhe cooking at its best. Truffle hunts, winery visits and tastings must be booked in advance and are not included in the price; we can help you book them. With your driver at the wheel, a glass of Nebbiolo with lunch is part of the day; we simply ask that you enjoy it responsibly. The price is per vehicle, not per person: from €830 with an E-Class for two, from €935 with a V-Class for up to six.

Pick-up at your hotel in Milan
Your driver meets you in the lobby and takes the motorway south and west past Alessandria and Asti, then the Asti–Cuneo motorway to Alba.
The old town and, in autumn, the truffle market
Walk the main street of the old town to the Cathedral of San Lorenzo and the medieval towers. On fair weekends the truffle market is the place to see, smell and buy white truffles, each one weighed and priced by the gram.
Tajarin with white truffle
In season, the classic is tajarin or a fried egg with white truffle shaved at the table; all year there is carne cruda, vitello tonnato and agnolotti del plin. Your driver can suggest a restaurant and book a table, which is essential on fair weekends.
A truffle hunt, or Barbaresco
In season, a trifolau can take you into the woods with his dog for about an hour, by reservation. Or drive 15 minutes to Barbaresco for the view from its medieval tower and a tasting of Nebbiolo at a winery.
Back to your hotel in Milan
Door-to-door return, or a drop-off at Malpensa, Linate, Turin or a hotel in the Langhe if you are staying on.

Milan to Alba: The Route
About 155 km, 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours: south on the A7, west on the A21 past Alessandria and Asti, then the A33 Asti–Cuneo motorway to Alba. Barbaresco and Grinzane Cavour are 10–15 minutes from the town.
Alba & White Truffle Day Trip — FAQ
Alba by private car or by train?
From Milan the train to Alba usually needs a change in Turin and takes around two and a half hours; truffle hunts, wineries and Barbaresco are then out of reach without a car. A private car halves the travel time and takes you straight from your hotel to the fair, the restaurant and the woods.
Buying white truffles: what to know
White truffles are sold by weight and priced by the gram, and prices change through the season with supply. Buy from the official market or a trusted shop, smell before you choose, and eat them within a few days: they lose aroma quickly. A small piece goes a long way over pasta or eggs.
How much is an Alba day trip?
MilanobyCar charges a fixed price per car: from €830 for two passengers in a Mercedes E-Class and from €935 for up to six in a V-Class, for an 8-hour day including driver, fuel, tolls and parking. The exact price for your date appears in the booking form.
