Amarone, where it is made
Valpolicella is a set of valleys running down from the Lessini mountains to the plain just north-west of Verona. Its most famous wine, Amarone della Valpolicella, starts with an unusual step: after the harvest the best bunches of Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella are laid out to dry in airy lofts called fruttai, typically for around four months, before they are pressed. This drying, the appassimento, concentrates sugar and flavour and gives Amarone its depth and warmth. The heart of the area, the Valpolicella Classica around Negrar, Fumane, Marano, San Pietro in Cariano and Sant’Ambrogio, is about 160 km from Milan, which makes it one of our longer day trips from Milan.
A good day mixes one or two cellar visits with lunch in the hills, a Romanesque church at San Giorgio and, if you wish, a couple of hours in Verona, 20 minutes away. Winery visits and tastings must be booked in advance and are not included in the price; we can help you book them. Amarone is a big wine, often 15% or more, so it is good that nobody in your party has to drive: taste slowly and enjoy it responsibly. The price is per vehicle, not per person: from €945 with an E-Class for two, from €1,065 with a V-Class for up to six.

Pick-up at your hotel in Milan
Your driver meets you in the lobby and takes the A4 east past Bergamo, Brescia and the southern tip of Lake Garda towards Verona.
Drying lofts, barrels and a vertical tasting
A family estate in the Valpolicella Classica shows you the fruttaio, where the grapes rest on racks or in crates from autumn into winter, then the cellar. The tasting usually runs from Valpolicella and Ripasso to Amarone, sometimes ending with sweet Recioto.
The Pieve and the view to Lake Garda
The hilltop hamlet of San Giorgio di Valpolicella has one of the oldest Romanesque churches in the area, with an early medieval ciborium inside and a cloister. From the village the view opens towards Lake Garda.
Risotto all’Amarone in the hills
Veronese cooking pairs well with these wines: risotto made with Amarone, bigoli pasta, braised meats and Monte Veronese cheese. Your driver can suggest a trattoria and book a table.
Verona, or a second winery
Verona’s centre is a limited-traffic zone, so we drop you near the Arena and collect you there: Piazza Bra, Via Mazzini, Piazza delle Erbe and the courtyard of Juliet’s House are all on foot. Or stay in the hills for a second cellar.

Milan to Valpolicella: The Route
About 160 km east on the A4 Milan–Venice motorway, then the A22 to the Verona Nord exit and the valley road into the Valpolicella: around 1 hour 50 minutes in normal traffic. Verona is 20 minutes south of the vineyards.

Valpolicella by private car or by train?
The fast train takes you from Milan to Verona, but the wineries are spread across the hills with no practical public transport, and after a tasting you should not be driving. A private car from your Milan hotel is the simplest way to visit several cellars and still see Verona.
What makes Amarone different
Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG is a dry red made from partly dried grapes, aged at least two years in wood before release. Its sweet counterpart, Recioto, is made the same way but fermentation stops earlier; Ripasso is Valpolicella refermented on Amarone pomace. Tasting all three side by side at the source is the best way to understand the area.
