## The Most Beautiful Lake in Italy — Entirely Yours for a Day

Lake Como is not simply a day trip. It is one of the most visually stunning places in Europe: an inverted-Y shaped lake 45 kilometres long, framed by the Alps, lined with **aristocratic villas, terraced gardens, and medieval villages** that have enchanted visitors from Pliny the Elder to George Clooney.

The villages of **Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio, and Cernobbio** each have their own character — coloured facades tumbling to the water, narrow stone staircases, lake ferries crossing between shores. **Villa Balbianello**, with its loggia jutting into the lake, is one of the most photographed places in all of Italy. **Villa Carlotta** in Tremezzo is famous for its botanical garden in spring bloom.

With MilanobyCar, your private chauffeur picks you up from your Milan hotel and drives you along the western shore of the lake, stopping wherever you wish, for as long as you want. You set the pace — and when you are ready to return, your car is waiting.

This is not a coach tour with thirty other people. It is your car, your driver, your day.

Suggested Itinerary## What You Will See

The following is a suggested sequence. Every stop can be added, removed, or reordered to suit your preferences. Ask us to plan your ideal route when booking.

Morning departure### Milan — Como City & Duomo

Your driver collects you from central Milan. The A9 motorway delivers you to **Como city** in approximately 50 minutes. Begin with a walk through the lakeside promenade, the elegant Piazza Cavour, and the **Duomo di Como** — a remarkable Gothic-Renaissance cathedral begun in 1396. The city is the perfect introduction to the lake's atmosphere.

Approx. 09:00 departure · 45 min in Como city

Lakeside Drive### Cernobbio & the Grand Villas

Drive north along the western shore through **Cernobbio**, home to the legendary **Villa d'Este** — a Renaissance palace and one of the world's most celebrated hotels. Continue past **Villa Erba**, used as a filming location in Ocean's Twelve, and admire Villa Fontanelle, the former Versace retreat in **Moltrasio**. These villas are best appreciated from the road or lakeside.

Scenic drive · 30 min approx.

Highlight of the tour### Villa Balbianello, Lenno

One of the most romantic buildings in Italy, **Villa Balbianello** stands on a wooded promontory jutting into the lake at Lenno. Its loggia and terraced gardens appear in **Casino Royale** and Star Wars Episode II. The FAI (National Trust of Italy) manages the property. Visiting the exterior and grounds is possible with a ticket; interior tours are by guided appointment. Note: closed Mondays and Wednesdays.

Allow 1 – 1.5 hours · Entrance fee not included

Optional ferry crossing### Tremezzo & Villa Carlotta

Just north of Lenno, **Tremezzo** offers one of the lake's most photographed views: a row of pastel-coloured buildings reflected in still water. **Villa Carlotta** is renowned for its botanical garden — in spring, the azalea and rhododendron displays are extraordinary. The villa also contains an art collection including works by Canova. A short ferry from here reaches Bellagio.

Allow 1 – 2 hours · Entrance fee not included

Free time lunch & explore### Bellagio — the Pearl of the Lake

No visit to Lake Como is complete without time in **Bellagio**. Perched at the tip of the promontory where the lake divides into three branches, it offers the most spectacular views on the entire lake. Explore the narrow stepped streets of the *Salita Serbelloni*, browse the boutiques, and have lunch at a lakeside terrace. From here, the lake opens to the north — a view that never loses its power.

Recommended: 1.5 – 2 hours minimum

Optional addition### Varenna & Menaggio

**Varenna**, on the eastern shore, is arguably the most authentically beautiful village on the lake: quieter than Bellagio, less developed, with a narrow promenade of pink-painted houses and the **Gardens of Villa Monastero**. It is reached by ferry from Menaggio or Bellagio. **Menaggio** on the western shore is a charming small town with a good selection of restaurants and a pleasant lakeside promenade — an ideal choice for a late-afternoon stop before the return to Milan.

Ferry not included · Allow 45 min – 1 hour each

Best Time to Visit## Lake Como Year-Round

The lake is beautiful in every season. Each period offers a different experience — and different advantages.

Spring · Apr – Jun#### Gardens in Full Bloom

The most spectacular season for gardens. Azaleas and rhododendrons at Villa Carlotta, wisteria on lakeside terraces. Warm days, quiet mornings. Villas fully open.

Summer · Jul – Aug#### Vivid Blue Waters

The classic Lake Como experience: deep blue water, swimming from rocks, lakeside aperitivo. More crowded in Bellagio; earlier departures recommended. Stunning light for photography.

Autumn · Sep – Nov#### Golden Light, Fewer Crowds

September is arguably the finest month — warm, less busy than August, with the light turning golden. October brings spectacular foliage on the surrounding mountains. Restaurants less crowded.

Winter · Dec – Mar#### Snow-Capped Alps & Solitude

Most villas close, but the lake takes on an intimate, private atmosphere. Snow on the surrounding Alps is breathtaking. Como city and the lakeside villages are at their most authentic — and prices are lower.

Guest Reviews## What Our Clients Say

Real guests who chose MilanobyCar for their Lake Como day from Milan.

RATED 5 / 5 — TripAdvisor

"We spent a perfect day at Lake Como with MilanobyCar. Our driver picked us up at 9am from our Milan hotel and we visited Cernobbio, Villa Balbianello, Tremezzo, and Bellagio at our own pace. He knew exactly which viewpoints to stop at for photographs and recommended a fantastic lunch restaurant in Bellagio. We were back in Milan by 7pm. Cannot recommend highly enough."

"I booked the S-Class for my wife's birthday — surprise. The driver was elegant, discreet, and clearly loved the lake. We stopped at Villa Balbianello, took the ferry to Bellagio, had a long lunch, and drove back along Varenna as the sun was setting. The car, the service, and the organisation were all impeccable. A day we will not forget."

"We were a family of five with three children and booked the V-Class. The driver was patient, informative, and wonderfully good with the children. We managed to visit Como Duomo, the gardens at Villa Carlotta, and spent two hours in Bellagio. Everything was so easy. Booking was fast, communication before the trip was excellent, and the car was spotless."

 FAQ## Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is included in the price? The price covers your private Mercedes vehicle, your English-speaking professional chauffeur, pick-up and drop-off at your Milan hotel, all motorway tolls, and fuel for the full 8-hour package. **Not included**: ferry or boat tickets, entrance fees to villas (Balbianello, Carlotta, Melzi, Monastero), lunch and drinks, local guide if requested, and extra hours beyond the 8-hour package. Extra hours are charged at **€ 70 per hour**, agreed in advance.

How long is the drive from Milan to Lake Como? From central Milan, the drive to Como city takes approximately **50 to 60 minutes** on the A9 motorway. Driving along the western shore of the lake to Bellagio takes a further 30 to 45 minutes. To Varenna on the eastern shore, allow approximately 1 hour 20 minutes from Milan via the SS36. Your driver will choose the best route based on the day's traffic.

Can I customise the itinerary?Yes — entirely. The suggested itinerary is a starting point. You can choose to focus on one or two villages and spend more time there, or cover more ground. If you want to visit a specific villa, take a ferry, or have lunch at a particular restaurant, let us know when booking and we will plan accordingly. The only limit is the 8 hours of the package (extendable at € 70 / hour).

Is the ferry to Bellagio included? No. The price covers the private car and chauffeur only. Ferry and boat services on the lake are operated by **Navigazione Laghi** and other private operators, and are purchased separately on the day. Your driver can advise on the best ferry crossing points (Cadenabbia to Bellagio, Varenna to Bellagio, etc.) and help you plan the timing to make best use of your 8 hours.

Is Villa Balbianello always open?Villa Balbianello is managed by the FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano) and is generally open from late March to November. It is **closed on Mondays and Wednesdays**. Entrance to the grounds and exterior is possible on open days; the villa interior can be visited only on guided tours. Pre-booking is recommended in high season. If Balbianello is closed on your chosen day, your driver can suggest Villa Carlotta or Villa Melzi as excellent alternatives.

What is the best time of year to visit?**Spring (April to June)** is exceptional: gardens in full bloom, warm temperatures, and villas fully open. **September** is the finest single month — warm, golden light, and significantly quieter than August. Summer is vivid and beautiful but Bellagio can be very crowded in July and August; earlier departures are recommended. **Winter** offers a quieter, more authentic experience with snow-capped Alps and lower prices, though most villas close.

Can I add a private boat or boat tour?Yes. A private boat tour on Lake Como is one of the most memorable ways to see the villas from the water — particularly Villa Balbianello and the grand houses around Lenno and Tremezzo. This is arranged separately and can be coordinated with your MilanobyCar tour. Please mention your interest when booking and we will recommend trusted local operators. A private boat typically costs from € 150 to € 350 per hour depending on the vessel.

How early should I depart from Milan? We recommend a **08:30 – 09:00 departure** from Milan. This allows you to arrive in Como or at the first stop around 10:00, ahead of the midday crowds, particularly in summer. With an 8-hour package starting at 09:00, you have flexibility to return to Milan at 17:00 or later. If you prefer a later start, that is equally possible — the itinerary simply shifts accordingly.

Can we pick up at Malpensa or Linate airport instead of a Milan hotel?Yes. We can begin the Lake Como day tour with a pick-up from **Malpensa Airport (MXP)**, **Linate Airport (LIN)**, or **Bergamo Airport (BGY)**. In this case, the 8-hour package starts from the airport pick-up time. Please mention this when enquiring so we can provide an accurate quote, as the airport of departure will affect the total driving distance.

How do I book? Can I pay on the day?You can book by **WhatsApp or phone** on [+39 335 821 0912](tel:+393358210912), by **email** at <booking@milanobycar.com>, or through our website. We recommend booking at least **48 hours in advance**. During peak season (July, August, September) and around major Milan events, earlier booking is strongly advised. Payment can be made by card or cash on the day; a deposit may be requested for high-season bookings.

### Lake Como Private Tour from Milan — the Complete Guide

Lake Como (Lago di Como, or Lario) is the third-largest lake in Italy and the deepest, reaching 410 metres at its maximum depth. It stretches 46 kilometres from Como in the south to Sorico in the north, branching into two arms around the Bellagio promontory. The western shore is served by the SS340 (Via Regina), the eastern shore by the SS36. Both offer spectacular lakeside driving with views that change with every bend in the road.

### Bellagio: the Most Visited Village on the Lake

Bellagio sits at the exact tip of the promontory separating the two southern branches of the lake, at an elevation that provides unobstructed views in three directions. The village has attracted visitors since the Roman period — Pliny the Younger had two villas here. Today its steep pedestrian lanes, boutiques, and lakeside restaurants draw visitors from around the world. Despite its popularity, early morning or late afternoon visits still allow a genuine sense of place.

### Varenna: the Hidden Gem of Lake Como

Many visitors never make it to Varenna on the eastern shore — a mistake. The village is arguably more beautiful and certainly less crowded than Bellagio. The narrow waterfront promenade, the **Via dell'Amore**, leads along the base of the cliffs to the gardens of Villa Monastero and Villa Cipressi. Varenna is best reached by ferry from Menaggio or Bellagio, making it a natural addition to a day that includes a lake crossing.

### Milan to Lake Como Transfer — One-Way or Return

MilanobyCar also offers simple one-way or return transfers from Milan to any destination on Lake Como — including Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio, Cernobbio, and Como city. If you are staying on the lake for one or more nights, a private transfer from your Milan hotel or airport is the most comfortable way to arrive. Prices for one-way transfers start from € 280 depending on vehicle and destination.
