Gstaad is a village in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland. It's located about 1,000 metres (3,300 ft) above sea level and is surrounded by mountains, with the highest peak being the Nadelhorn at 3,693 m (12,008 ft). The village itself is a popular ski resort and also known for its luxury hotels and shopping.
Gstaad is a Swiss village in the Bavarian Alps. It is the largest town in the administrative district of Gstaad and a popular ski resort. The village itself is located about 1,300 metres (4,270 ft) above sea level. Gstaad was first mentioned as "Staad" (literal translation: "Nest") in 1229 as an uninhabited area belonging to the Abbey of St. Gallen. In 1255 it was mentioned as "Gastat". Gstaad has been inhabited since the 13th century when Bernese families settled here. In 1683 it was first mentioned as a "Curtis" (small castle). In 1864 the first lift (the Schatzalp gondola) was built by Jakob Bösch. It ran from Schatzalp to Güggis and was powered by two horses.[1] On 30 December 1895, the first road was opened which connected Güggis with Stechelberg; this road included a pedestrian tunnel at Riedmatt.[2] In 1930 work began on building a new road between Gstaad-Village and Stechelberg-Village.[3] On 10 July 1938,
Gstaad has much to offer in terms of sports and outdoor activities. The Saanenland region offers a wide range of sporting activities: Hiking (on a network of trails of more than 300km), mountain biking, paragliding or golf. Whitewater rafting and canoeing adventures await on the River Saane. Summer cross-country skiing is available in the “Glacier 3000” glacier ski area. The Schönried summer sled run, a via ferrata and the natural paradise of Lake Lauenensee are all ideal destinations for family excursions.
