Parma is one of the most beautiful cities in Italy, and it's steeped in history.

It is best known for its monuments, castles, art, cuisine and opera. The city was founded by the Romans and has seen its fair share of rulers over the years. It has been ruled by the Picena people, the Lombards and the Franks as well as being part of the Kingdom of Italy.

The city gained its independence from Milan in 1731 when it became a dukedom under Farnese rule. This was followed by a period of Austrian domination before Napoleon Bonaparte came to power and created a kingdom for his wife Maria Luigia d'Austria who was very popular with the Parmagians.

Today Parma is known worldwide for its high-quality food products including ham, parmesan cheese and salami as well as having some great restaurants to try them out!

In the heart of Italy, Parma is a city that has been home to some of the most influential families in history. With its impressive monuments and castles, art, cuisine and opera, it has become one of Italy's most beautiful cities of art.

Parma was originally founded by the Romans in 218 BC as the trading center of the Po Valley. It is one of the oldest cities in Emilia-Romagna region.

In 1441, Francesco Sforza moved Parma from its original location to a new site where it would be easier to defend against attacks from rival families in the region. During this time period it was known as "Parma di San Secondo" (St. Secondo's Parma). In 1545 it became part of the Farnese family's Dukedom of Parma, Piacenza and Guastalla until 1731 when it was confiscated by Spain during the War of Polish Succession. The Spanish held control until 1801 when they were defeated by Napoleon Bonaparte at Marengo (1800).

In 1814 Parma became part of the Kingdom of Italy under Napoleon's rule until his fall in 1815 at Waterloo (1815). The following year King Charles Albert I returned Parma back to its original rulers: Marie Louise d'Orléans-Bonaparte

In the mountains, on the hills, in the plains, in every strategic point of the Province of Parma, fortresses and castles (around 100) arose from 200 to 500 CE due to the wishes of powerful families like the Rossi's, Sanvitale's, Pallavicino's, Da Correggio's, Meli Lupi's and Torelli's. They were meant to secure their homes while adding architectural elegance and decorative richness inside. Many were strong fortresses and often sumptuous homes to small courts. During the "Rinascita" era they were frequented with enthusiasm by all kinds of poets and painters of the highest fame.

The centuries added something but removed a lot: however art, history and legend still exist in the air of these castles even in those whose only white ruins show through green shrubbery

Parma, a province of Italy, is located in the Po Valley. The landscape is characterized by rolling hills, plains and mountains. The famous Parma ham comes from this region. In the centuries before and after the Roman Empire, several castles were built in strategic locations throughout the province. Though many were destroyed over time, some still exist today. The people who built these fortresses and castles were among the most powerful families at that time: the Rossi family, Sanvitale family, Pallavicino family, Da Correggio family, Meli Lupi family and Torelli family. They wanted to build strong fortresses for both protection and defense against invaders but also as a show of wealth and power for themselves. The architecture was meant to be elegant as well as functional—a way to express their wealth and power through their homes while still providing security.
