Private Day Tour from Milan## Private Day Trip from Milan to Bellagio — by Private Chauffeur

The [Bellagio day trip from Milan](https://www.milanobycar.com/day-trip-from-milan) is one of the most requested private tours we operate. The village sits on a narrow peninsula where all three branches of Lake Como converge — from the waterfront you can see in three directions across the water, with the Alps rising behind. Prices start at €580 per vehicle for an 8-hour package, and the tour is entirely **private**: no other passengers, no timed group departures, no coach station to find.

MilanobyCar has operated private day trips from Milan since 1993. The fleet is owned — not rented — and all vehicles are Mercedes: E-Class for couples, V-Class for families or groups of up to six. Prices are fixed per vehicle, not per person, which means a group of four pays the same as a couple. Your English-speaking chauffeur picks you up directly at your Milan hotel; there is no meeting point and no timetable to catch. The itinerary is a suggestion: stops, timing, and pace are yours to decide on the day.

Unlike the Trenitalia train to Varenna — which requires a 15-minute ferry connection and over 75 minutes of travel each way with tight return timing — this private tour places a vehicle at your disposal for the full day. You arrive in Bellagio when it suits you, stay as long as you like, and can add Varenna by ferry or detour to Menaggio without worrying about missing the last train back. [Book online in 2 minutes](https://www.milanobycar.com/tour-booking-from), or call us to discuss a custom itinerary.

**MilanobyCar vs alternatives.** GetYourGuide and Viator list group coach tours to Bellagio from €55–80 per person — shared buses of 30–50 people, fixed departure times, limited time at each stop. MilanobyCar’s private tour costs from €580 per vehicle for up to 2 passengers, or €640 for up to 6 — which for a group of four works out at €145–160 per person. Less than many guided group tours, with none of the compromises.

Suggested Itinerary — Fully Customisable## Bellagio Day Trip Itinerary — What You Will See

A suggested 8-hour route from Milan. Every stop is optional and the order can be adjusted on the day. Your chauffeur can advise on timing based on season and conditions.

 Departure

### Milan Hotel Pickup — 09:00 Departure

Your chauffeur meets you at the entrance of your Milan hotel at 09:00. The drive north follows the SS36 motorway through Lecco, where the road runs close to the eastern shore of the lake and the first views of Como appear. Near Abbadia Lariana, roughly 20 minutes past Lecco, there is a lay-by with an unobstructed view south across the water — worth a brief stop for photos if skies are clear. No motorway tolls apply on the SS36 stretch north of Lecco; these are included in the price regardless.

 Depart 09:00 No entrance fee

 Main destination

### Bellagio Waterfront — Piazza Mazzini and the Salite

Your chauffeur parks at the Bellagio car park (EUR 2–3 per hour, paid separately) and walks you to the village entrance. The Piazza Mazzini is the central square where the ferry terminal sits — you can watch the car ferry cross from Cadenabbia and the passenger ferry from Varenna arrive every 30 minutes. The real Bellagio is one street back: the stepped alleyways known as *salite*, running perpendicular to the waterfront, lined with local silk shops, gelaterie, and aperitivo bars that open at 10:00. Explore before 11:00, before the day-trip coaches arrive and the main street becomes crowded.

Allow 1–1.5 hours Free to walk

 Highlight of the tour

### Villa Melzi Gardens — The Best Viewpoint on the Lake

Villa Melzi was the summer residence of Francesco Melzi d'Eril, Napoleon's viceroy in Italy, and the gardens are the finest example of English-style landscape design on Lake Como. The layout follows the shoreline for 500 metres, with azaleas, Japanese maples, and a Japanese water garden that dates to 1812. The view from the garden's lakeside path — looking north up the Lecco branch of the lake with the mountains behind — is the photograph most people associate with Bellagio. The villa interior is not open to visitors; the garden is the attraction. Note: the gardens are closed from November through February.

Allow 45–60 minutes €8 per person — not included

 Insider tip

### Pescallo Hamlet — Bellagio Without the Crowds

Pescallo is a hamlet of roughly 30 houses on the eastern shore of the Bellagio peninsula, a 10-minute walk from the centre through olive groves. It has a small harbour used by local fishermen, two restaurants, and no tourist shops. In high season, when the Bellagio waterfront is packed with visitors from the morning coaches, Pescallo is quiet. Ristorante La Punta, which sits on a terrace above the harbour, is the better of the two restaurants — book ahead in July and August as there are fewer than 40 covers. This is one of the stops that group tour buses cannot reach, and it is worth the short walk.

Allow 30–45 minutes Free to visit — lunch extra

 Optional addition

### Varenna by Ferry — 15 Minutes Across the Lake

The passenger ferry from Bellagio to Varenna departs every 30 minutes in season and takes 15 minutes (EUR 5.20 return per person, not included). Varenna is quieter than Bellagio and has two things worth seeing: the Castello di Vezio, a ruined 14th-century fortress perched above the village with clear views across the lake, and the Via del Ferro, a lakefront footpath carved into the rock that is entirely closed to cars. Allow 1.5–2 hours in Varenna if you want to see both. Your chauffeur waits in the Bellagio car park while you cross, so there is no timetable pressure.

Allow 1.5–2 hours including ferry Ferry €5.20 pp return — not included

 Return to Milan

### Return Drive — Arriving Back at Your Hotel by 17:30

The return follows the SS36 motorway south to Milan. Depending on traffic — heavier on summer Friday afternoons — journey time is 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes. If you want to extend the day for dinner in Bellagio or to watch the light change on the lake at dusk, extra hours are billed at €70 per hour. Your chauffeur drops you at any address in Milan, including Malpensa or Linate airport if you have a connecting flight that evening.

Depart ~16:00, arrive Milan ~17:30 Extensions €70 per hour

TripAdvisor — 5 Stars## What Our Passengers Say

Real reviews from travellers who took a private Lake Como day trip with MilanobyCar.

★★★★★

“Our driver met us at the hotel at exactly 9am and we were in Bellagio by 10:15. He knew where to park, walked us to the village entrance and suggested the best route through the alleyways. We had never been to Lake Como and this was the perfect introduction.”

James H. — London, UK

Bellagio private day tour — September 2025

★★★★★

“We were a family of five and the V-Class was ideal. The driver was patient with the children and knew every good photo stop along the SS36. Villa Melzi gardens were a highlight we would have missed without his suggestion. Worth every euro.”

Christine M. — Chicago, US

Lake Como family day trip — June 2025

★★★★★

“I booked for my partner’s birthday. The chauffeur added a stop at Pescallo for lunch — a tiny harbour with almost no other visitors. That local knowledge made the whole day. Completely private, nothing shared with strangers.”

Frequently Asked Questions## Bellagio Day Trip from Milan — FAQ

How long is the drive from Milan to Bellagio?

The drive from Milan to Bellagio takes approximately 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes, depending on traffic, via the SS36 motorway along the eastern shore of Lake Como. MilanobyCar departs directly from your Milan hotel, so there is no meeting point or train to catch.

Is this a private tour or a group tour?

This is an entirely private tour. The vehicle is reserved exclusively for your group — no other passengers, no shared coach, no fixed group size. You set the pace and the stops.

What is included in the Bellagio day trip?

Included: Mercedes vehicle for 8 hours, English-speaking licensed chauffeur, hotel pickup and drop-off in Milan, all motorway tolls and fuel. Not included: Villa Melzi garden entrance fee (€8 per person), lunch, ferry tickets if you choose to cross to Varenna (€5.20 return per person).

Can we customise the stops or extend the tour?

Yes. The itinerary is a suggestion, not a fixed schedule. You can skip any stop, add a detour to Varenna or Menaggio, or request more time in Bellagio. Extensions beyond the 8-hour package are billed at €70 per hour.

Which vehicles are available for the Bellagio day trip?

Available vehicles are the Mercedes E-Class (up to 2 passengers, from €580), Mercedes V-Class (up to 6 passengers, from €640), and Mercedes S-Class (2 passengers, premium executive class, price on request). All prices are per vehicle for the 8-hour package.

Is Bellagio accessible by car, or do I need to take a ferry?

Bellagio is accessible directly by car via the SS36 motorway from Milan. Your chauffeur parks at the Bellagio car park and walks you to the village entrance. No ferry is required to reach Bellagio, though a short crossing to Varenna (15 minutes, €5.20 return per person) can be added if you wish.

### Bellagio Day Trip from Milan: Private Chauffeur vs Coach Tour or Train

The main alternatives for a Bellagio day trip from Milan are the Trenitalia train (EUR 7.40 each way from Milano Centrale to Varenna, then a 15-minute ferry to Bellagio at EUR 4.60 return) and group coach tours operated by Zani Viaggi, GetYourGuide and Viator at EUR 55–110 per person. The train route works well if you are comfortable with timetables and prepared to spend over 2.5 hours in transit round-trip. The coach tours cover Bellagio but on fixed schedules with groups of up to 50 people and often limited time at each stop. A private day trip from Milan with MilanobyCar solves both problems: no timetable, no crowds, direct pickup at your hotel, and the same vehicle available all day for any detours you choose.

### How Much Does a Bellagio Day Trip from Milan Cost?

MilanobyCar charges per vehicle, not per person. The 8-hour Bellagio private day trip starts at €580 for the Mercedes E-Class (up to 2 passengers) and €640 for the Mercedes V-Class (up to 6 passengers). For a couple, that is €290 each — comparable to many premium guided tours. For a family of four in the V-Class, the per-person cost is €160, which is less than most Viator or GetYourGuide private tours and significantly less than per-person shared coach prices once you add transfers. The price includes vehicle, chauffeur, all tolls and fuel for the full 8 hours. Villa Melzi entrance (€8 pp), lunch, and ferry tickets are the only additional costs.

### Bellagio: What to Know Before You Go

Bellagio sits at the exact centre of Lake Como, where the lake splits into three branches — this geographic position is why it has been a summer retreat for European aristocracy and, more recently, for film industry figures, since the 18th century. The village has no train station; without a car, arrival requires a ferry from Varenna or Como. The waterfront fills rapidly after 10:30 in summer: arriving at 09:30–10:00 gives you the alleys and gardens in relative quiet. The best season for Villa Melzi is April through May when the azaleas are in flower; gardens are closed November–February. One practical note: the silk scarves sold in the salite are genuinely made in the Como district — a legitimate local craft purchase, not tourist merchandise.
